Stayed up too late watching old soviet cosmonaut interviews and videos of alternative styles of motherboards and chips from IBM.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRy8k-M7si8

It is wild how much of the original chips, mainframes and circuit boards were done by hand.

Public Reminder: BitTorrent is great for more than just piracy. If your connection is unreliable and you need anything largish downloaded look for a magnet link, the protocol is built for this.

Remove one huge task you've been procrastinating on and the next day you finish up the 30 other tasks you were avoiding because you needed to finish the big one first.

Be careful you don't find yourself becoming the "too smart" engineer who ends up only ever being able able to work alone because you alienate and belittle everyone around you over nothing.

If you have something that is about to fail or is in need of repair, don't sleep on it. Going to be a cold hard winter of supply shortages, get your house in order now while you can.

Reading how people connect their older solar panels direct to their heating element of their water heaters. Skipping ac/dc conversion and going nearly to boiling, with a temperature mix on the outflow to cool the water to a real set point. PRETTY neat.

everyone has the same problems, just that some people choose to engage with the problems and others are forced to engage with the problems.

example: everyone in northern latitudes needs to heat their home:- some choose to spend money and be incredibly wasteful.- others are forced to wear warm clothes and burn wood. We all live on a spectrum between extremes. BUT many don't realize they are living on an extreme at all.

"this is normal, everyone burns natural gas shipped via (leaky) pipes all over the world into a home with bad insulation and drafts, its fine" this is the norm for many people but it's actually an extreme. The only way you get more extreme is like sleeping next to plutonium.

if you want to be efficient, you make the choice. I think we should make the defaults better but until then we need to realize the choices we make, even if we didn't make them in the first place.

buying a boat and burning wood is actually not that extreme when you think about it in this context. The boat can move to warmer places, it has lots of thermal mass, likely you already dress warmly.

@simon freelancing is always a race to the bottom. I suspect some people might say "yo just take on 10x as many contracts and let gpt write and you edit" and they just miss the point, nobody will come to you if they can skip right to gpt.

@neauoire I think you must have shared this once but kinda reminds me of this https://www.ursulakleguin.com/a-rant-about-technologyWorld and the things we have created are so incredible, nothing gives me “the ick” faster than a lack of curiosity in them.
