For many accounts that have been here for some time, Twitter was a very unsafe place. It was a place we suffered so much harassment, hate and bile, we finally made the often hard decision to switch to this smaller, but much friendlier and truly social network. We wanted to leave Twitter behind. We had enough of the toxic algorithms that changed people's behaviour over there for the worse. We didn't want to be reminded of Twitter.

@TQ I've honestly been doing it for years! I try to avoid naming brands as a way to not give them free publicity and to avoid the algorithms, so I talk about the blue site (facebook), the red N (netflix), doing monopoly searches (google)... second nature by now!

Also Mastodon has seen multiple waves of people coming from Twitter. With every new wave, the discussion focus was very much: What here is different from Twitter, what feature is better, what's missing. This kind of discussion has often been not too healthy for this place, because it often centered technology, not what it did to us. Not the culture.Cause we have a culture. Our memes here are different. From 🍍 to :flan_jorts: to IT'S BEEN.

So, to sum things up: We mostly use "birdsite" to both remind ourselves of our negative experiences with Twitter, to reinforce the feeling we as a group try to do better, and to not think about Twitter itself too much. It's a way to distance ourselves from the toxicity while acknowledging that this here is not just "another social network".It's a different culture.

Just to flesh out the case here a little bit: I firmly believe that the way that corporate "social" networks use algorythms is toxic. The algorythms are used to encourage "engagement". They make you angry so you have to post more, they hide what you want to see to make you scroll more. They make you talk about people not with people. They make you crave voyeuristic entertainment, not conversation.
