@iska Energy needs are higher than traditional banking. Artificial scarcity for the sake of it. Money laundering made easy. Pyramid schemes, but legal ish. Crypto bros are insufferable to be around because they act like every anti vegan claims vegans do.

@iska I think there's some mistrust of it since all you really see of it in the news is speculation and celebration by problematic tech entrepreneurs. Especially with NFTs, having sort of underwhelming graphic art pieces and issues with links in the ledger instead of actual assets, it's easy to sort of dismiss as unrealized, but it is all new technology.

@splitshockvirus @iska It's that urinal meme, you are minding your own business and the "big shot" NFT bro skips over all the other ones to piss next to you so they can rant about how great their shitcoins are and how you need to buy in at only 25k a coin. "Mortgage your house my man, wanna be poor forever?"

@TrackerRoo Crypto isn't perfect but.1. energy consumption is a problem with bitcoin and ethereum, some people just don't let go of them despite their inferiority.2. there's no currency without scarcity, there are also cryptocurrencies without a limited supply like monero.3. liberals already want to be more vulnerable to crime for free markets.4. I 110% agree, crypto bros are the worst people in the universe. This doesn't make cryptocurrency bad however, the tech is open source.

@iska Free of crime? A million dollar NFT heist just took place a few days ago. Apes yanked, apes that had to then be removed from the system and zeroed out in value because there's no way to recover them. Know what happens when someone steals my card information? I call my bank, card is cancelled and I get my money back within one business day. All my money, in full, returned. Name one instance of NFT theft where the victim got their property returned in full.

@iska because they were told to*.* there have been a lot of shitcoin scams** there may be a growing issue with energy expenditure due to proof of work and some severe scaling issues that are only being worked on at a snails pace

@TrackerRoo that's a strawman argument, but. What if the bank doesn't act in your favor? What if you're from Russia, or don't want to go through legal hell to help a foreign friend like you could with coins and bills to a local one? Cryptocurrency is the only answer I know of.

@iska Yeah why use real money backed by real banks with actual investigations done in instances of fraud when you can buy crypto and hope for the best? As for Russia it is super telling that when sanctions hit crypto markets refused to cut them off. More so that when Russia was cut from Twitter the number of bots pushing crypto and crypto accounts in general died off overnight. Every little thing just screams it is a scam but you do you buddy.

@iska in a longer answerbasically, at the most non-conspiracy laden level, crypto is a direct assault on the power monopoly of the government. every government has its central bank and does their funny business with the cash. but crypto systems rip control of cash from the state. they can't even pivot their monopoly of force to steal your money (taxes) because things like monero allow you to create new wallets out of air and tumble the money wherever and its completely indistinguishable from legal or illegal traffic. their primary mode of income (theft) is at risk. that's a pretty big enemy :blobcatterrified: naturally this has lead to massive amounts of fear porn and negative PR to keep people out. systems like monero bring the privacy of cash to digital systems which in turn destroys the ability for shit like the IRS preferentially harassing the poor ( https://trac.syr.edu/tracirs/latest/679/ ) because they can no longer audit *anyone*.you can see when Facebook started trying to push Libra the EU uppity ups very quickly rioted about how they were going to lose control of the money. i don't think they riot about BTC and XMR because there is no corporate backer pushing it so adoption has been very slow, and there are scaling issues that do hold it back severely.there are of course lots of cash grabs (ICOs, NFTs, people taking bitcoin code and just renaming the coin and shilling it as a new thing) but my firm opinion is that the legitimate risk to the financial institutions has resulted in a lot of sponsored pushback.there are "good liberals" who have been working in this space, cf. Duniter and Holochain, who have been exploring other uses for crypto chains. they aren't really equipped with big PR firms so you don't hear about them much.

I don't know about them but I hate it because of false promises such as anonymous transactions (all transactions are stored on a public ledger), decentralisation (all major crypto currency are controlled by some group usually the founders and things like ICO happens, not to mention many of the nodes runs on platforms like AWS), better digital ownership because NFT (I shouldn't have to explain this but digital ownership can't exist without a powerful entity backing it up), Proof of Stake is the future (it's just bank with extra steps and no benifits, people with the most amount of coins will control the network sooner than you can blink and as mentioned by me in a previous point founders and ICO buyers will have the most amount of coins), and by far the most important point according to me, majority of wallets are made on middleman proprietary service such as Coinbase and Co. They're collection more data about you than your bank does and would comply with glowies' request for data instantaneously.

@TrackerRoo do you really think it's "real" money when no fiat currency is backed by gold but trust that the government won't print another 10 trillion next day? Because in the last 2 years even that trust has been broken. So whose currency is really scarce artificially. And what if the government or banks are going to be fraudulent? We're all people, after all.>crypto markets refused to cut them offthat's the point I was trying to make, they can't. And I can actually pay and work somewhat.
