There are plans for changing it because many of the younger generation aren't able to recognise it and thus being unable to save by clicking on it.

@colinsmatt11 @enigmatico Why don't they recognize it? It's the save icon everywhere.

@besserwisser @colinsmatt11 They don't know what a floppy disk is so they don't understand the icon, therefore they don't know it's used to record data.

@enigmatico @colinsmatt11 But they should know it from other applications! Usually it just says "save" right next to it anyway or when you hover over it.

@besserwisser @colinsmatt11 People doesn't understand computers. They don't pay attention to those details. I heard about people not even knowing how to use notepad.

@enigmatico @colinsmatt11 @besserwisser I think that is a ridiculous notion. The play button is equally ubiquitous in UIs, and no understanding of the icon is required. Its a symbol representing a concept, the same as + - = and a young child has no trouble with that. No knowledge of what a floppy is bars anyone from knowing what it represents: saving.

@wdavery @enigmatico @colinsmatt11 Exactly! You're just gonna confuse people if you change it.

@besserwisser @wdavery @colinsmatt11 That's actually not entirely true. One of the most important facotrs of UI design is intuitivity. The fact that any person, at any time, can know what a button exactly does by only looking at the icon of the button, saving them the time and hassle of having to look it up on manuals or the internet. If a person doesn't know what the button does and doesn't know what the icon represents, they won't ever press it. Because they don't know what it does. Or they will hessitate to do so. Having a button anyone recognizes makes it easier for anyone to figure out what it does. One of the things about the play button, as well as the stop, or rewind buttons, is that they are standardized. But it's also their simplicity. They don't simbolize objects, they simbolize actions through simple shapes (The play button being a triangle pointing in a direction, simbolizes the media moving forwards). While the floppy icon simbolize an action through the shape of an item. The fact that it's symbol is an item makes it harder for anyone not knowing what the item is to recognize it's action.

@enigmatico @colinsmatt11 @besserwisser You are stuck on the fact that the floppy symbol is also a tangible item. It isn’t to young people, as you said yourself. The shape of the icon is indeed exactly like playback icons. The save button *is* standardized and is in no way connected to the tangible floppy disk item.

@wdavery @colinsmatt11 @besserwisser It's not about being tangible or not. It may or may not be tangible, that is irrelevant. It's just the fact that if someone doesn't recognize the item, they won't recognize what the button does. The same could happen with other icons. If you see a lock on a button, you know that button "locks" something, or at least prevents someone from doing something. But what if, in the future, nobody uses locks anymore? People from that era won't know wtf a lock is, therefore they won't know wtf the button does. This isn't something I'm making up, it's how psychology works, and it's something companies study very well in order to comprehend how our minds work to make all of this stuff more accessible to the general public. Companies like Apple for instance might be scummy and bad, but they did their research on UI and they know this stuff very, very well. As a result, a lot of people use their products despite being scummy and bad simply because they are easy to use and user friendly.

@enigmatico @colinsmatt11 @besserwisser And Apple has not introduced a new save button despite this UI research. What does that tell you? It is engrained in society as that symbol, changing it would be silly. We obviously have entirely opposite opinions on this, I get where you’re coming from but I can’t get behind it.

@wdavery @colinsmatt11 @besserwisser It's not that I'm in favor or against this decission. It's simply that I understand their decission (for those changing it) and I don't disagree with that decission because I understand it and they do have a point you like it or not.Apple might not have changed it yet but they might change it in the near future. Other companies might do the same. While a lot of companies will stay with the classic icon.
