@kinetix Great. I went through the largest forest rich area in the Netherlands which has great almost single track cycling roads.

@pocketvj Thanks, I bought the Specialized Diverge two years ago and it's a very versatile bike suitable for bike packing, graveling and long distance rides. I recently bought a Mio for navigation which a great addition for these kind of rides.

@ericbuijs @pocketvj I think I saw the Diverge in a store when I was shopping for gravel bikes. Is it the model with the suspension on the handlebar post? Or maybe the Roubaix?

@ericbuijs @pocketvjSeems like you had a nice trip! How many days were you away, if you don't mind my asking? (Feel free to ignore)I bought a Garmin Edge 530 over the weekend, it had a 14% discount. Maybe they're clearing inventory for the next model. Mio bike computers can't be found here. I've only seen Garmin and Wahoo computers, and Wahoo don't seem to provide a map to browse. In any case, based on discussions I had last year on Fedi, I was reasonably confident I'd be able to manage a Garmin device with Linux. I could in theory even upgrade the firmware by copying files to the device when plugged through USB. That obviously requires open access to the files. Which was usually the case up to the last version from last week. I guess I'll see. For now I installed the Android app.

@normand I was away for seven days. I rode to the house of friends and stayed there doing some local graveling and MTB trips.I took a good look at the Garmin 530. It's very nice but the screen is too small for me to read. Mio is the only one here with a large enough screen and a reasonable price. Unfortunately I couldn't use Linux to update it so I had to use the old Mac that I still have. @pocketvj

@normandc Yes the Roubaix has suspension in the handlebar post. From what I've seen I like the Roubaix a lot. The downside is that it can hold up to 32mm tires. I currently have 38mm in the Diverge giving me a good riding experience on both tarmac and rough terrain. I did cobble stones with the Diverge and with low pressure in the tires I had an okay ride.@pocketvj

@normandc I took another look at the current line of Diverge and noticed that the higher end bikes also have the same suspension as the Roubaix.

@ericbuijs we spent 4 nights outside, sleeping in biwak, cooking on fire. Pretty happy with the setup.Just finished sewing a new handlebar bag to pack more stuff in front, next will be sewing a smaller seatbag with stabilisation tubes....I'd love to have an old AMP F4 LTS suspension fork, but no one builds paralellogram forks anymore...

@pocketvj making the bags sounds like a lot of fun. Did you do the design yourself. From what I've read the linkage fork is a very interesting idea because it decouples the mechanical motion of the fork compression from the travel of the spring. Potentially giving better performance on rough surface. And they look great too. Apparently there are still some small producers working on linkage but almost everything for bicycles is telescopic now.

@ericbuijs bags: yes, takes a lot of trial and error, first approach was welded metal tubes for the kitchen stuff, see www.brandisbrandisbrand.com, but this was a bit 'noisy'. Now we have something like a diy challenge with my friends, its super funny and nice...Do you know anyone whi still builds linkage forks?

@pocketvj I suppose small manufacturers hope that it's a niche market but most if not all are dead ends. Trust made a recent entry with The Message, which looks very nice, but their website is not active any more. Against the telescopic suspension from Fox or Rockshock is an uphill battle because their are relatively cheap and have good quality.https://www.pinkbike.com/news/review-6-months-on-the-trust-message-linkage-fork.html

@ericbuijs @pocketvj I agree, the screen is quite small. But the Edge 1030 Plus with the biggest screen is just too expensive (nearly $900 CAD).I used it for the first time yesterday on a 53 km ride. I had it navigate to a destination, then I went further and checked up on the map occasionally. It's not easy browsing a map with buttons, I'm almost regretting not going with the touchscreen model (which was $130 CAD more). I ended up getting my phone out a few times. But the screen size is fine for turn-by-turn navigation. It worked OK, although you don't get to refine the course - or I haven't found how. For now, it looks like it will do what I need it to, and my phone will just be a backup. There are preset profiles, for road, urban, gravel. In theory, the navigation feature may give me gravel paths and roads with this profile, it will be interesting to find out.In any case, being able to manage the device with a Linux PC was a must for me. As soon as I go back to the office for good, the Windows PC is getting out of the house! 😁

@ericbuijs @pocketvj I noticed that the maps on my #Garmin Edge 530 were dated 2019, and the Garmin Connect Android app didn't offer to update them (I updated the firmware through it). I bit the bullet, as I currently have a Windows PC at home (employer owned CAD workstation), so tonight I installed Garmin Express and updated the maps. I find it silly to not be able to do it with the mobile app.My Edge saves routes in FIT format. I found #GPXsee, an open source Linux map viewer that can import gpx and FIT files (and a few others). Unfortunately it cannot export them to gpx. But I found a Python library that apparently does, I'll test it out soon.Garmin Express has been known to install successfully on Linux with Wine, although the latest entry on the WineHQ db reported failure. Somerhing to look into in the long run. Worst case is I keep the device as is.

@normand Is their a navigation device for cycling that does support Linux? I mean other than being able to access the file system of the device. During my recent research I couldn't find any.BTW: I can't believe that Garmin still uses their own proprietary file format. @pocketvj
