@Debradelai @darulharb Bullshit. It’s to provide context and to make connections…to see patterns of human behavior…the old adage “history repeats itself”? Conflict in Ukraine? Don’t talk about that…that’s a naked attempt at indoctrination…it’s about relevance. It’s about key concepts that define the humanities. Some teachers are so dogmatic in their approach and beliefs that EVERYTHING they do is some form of indoctrination…but teaching shit that matters and connecting the dots is not.

We aren’t all teacher Union waving Commie mindfuckers. You cannot teach historical concepts in a vacuum…We can’t equate “current events” it’s nefarious purposes. Historical revisionism is rife…progressive horse hit litters the landscape…but don’t associate that with current events…blame the standards.

The process of creating the standards is a highly political one where politicians tap their favorite buddies from around the state and pull them together to make them feel anointed and empowered. That’s where the shady shit happens…backroom deals with textbook makers…educational agendas being set behind the curtain. NOT in teaching current events.

@Clayrjr @Debradelai @darulharb I absolutely blame the standards starting with the feds one size fits all. It is destroying our great teachers and shielding the less desirable. The answer has always been localization. Teaching is reaching to the different styles of learning and to different levels of abilities. I hurt for the educators in my family that struggle to work around a rigid mono capacity setting.

When I explained the "insurrection" (was a current event) last year I had a parent come after me. I was teaching International Baccalaureate (IB) Psychology and framing the "insurrection" as a form of "deindividuation". Was called in to admin as an apologist...if you don't kowtow activist parent head-hunt. Social media doxxing of teachers is real.

My boss, half my age, sends me text messages & voice telephone calls every once in a while, & I find out about them a few days later since I typically leave my cell phone in the break room and at home and don't check it much. But lots of kids these days are so intertwined with their phones that tractors run them over when they are right next to the tractors because they are looking at the 3" diameter screen rather than up.

I don't tell kids what to believe...I challenge them to make claims and support with evidence based on defining narratives. Current events help frame the human condition. We cam compare and contrast past with present.The whole goal is not to indoctrinate...It's to teach kids wired in regurgitation to learn systems of thinking.
