🧵1 / NAs a software #contractor I find myself missing out on being able to commit to a project long term and have little to no influence in encouraging my clients to either use or create open source software.I find myself obligated to work on platforms I don't believe in or trust, such as AWS, Google Cloud etc.Am I a sellout? Why don't I find a permanent role for a company I believe in?Being a contractor has been massively beneficial for my ADHD, I make my own hours... cont 👇

🧵2 / N... I don't feel overwhelming guilt if I need a sick day or a mental health day. I get to work with my fiance, being able to employ her and have her help me with so many aspects of my job brings us so much joy and deliver amazing work. Am I still a sellout? why do I still feel like one?I make more money as a contractor, I've always had trouble with my finances, again due to the ADHD, so more money = a buffer = less mental stress. cont... 👇

🧵3 / 3 prollyBut because I make more money contracting, working on projects I don't believe in, I feel like a sell out. Objectively my mental health comes first, right?Should I go back to a lower paying role that I believe in? Is it worth the mental stress of the 9 to 5? worth sending my future wife back to working a job she doesn't like?I'm very privileged, but I feel like I don't deserve it because of the work I do.I feel like a sellout. does anyone else struggle with this?

@twoft Paying for your own needs and the needs of your future is more important.Giving your future wife a chance to not work means it’s easier to raise kids since one of you is home by default, if that’s a path you choose to go down.Just like the corporate world pushes a hustle and tries to make you guilty for not having one, Fedi (and the fairly leftish vibe of many denizens) will try and guilt you into sacrificing your own well being for an ethereal ideology of ill defined returns.

@wholesomedonut @twoft If you find you are healthier, happier and more capable of providing what you and yours need in the worldAnd can plan for the future in some capacityTHAT is the good thing. THAT is the good option.Providing for you and yours is not selling out.And even if it was.. that’s somebody else’s (often crooked or misconceived) definition. Their opinions and viewpoints doesn’t matter near as much as how you feel about your own life choices and path.

@wholesomedonut @twoft no you definitely shouldn't go back to a job that doesn't pay enough for you to survive on and that adds more burden to your wife, you should wait until the both of you have enough money to live off before moving to a more ethical job that has a lower salary

There's huge benefits to being a contractor. Contracting is like dating rather than marrying. With contracting you don't have to take part in any silly corporate events (which I always hate). You can force them to keep their commitments (like no travel, etc), because you're free to walk away. You don't need to worry about it when they make bad decisions (against your recommendations) because you will be leaving them soon anyway. With everything being temporary that can relieve lots of stresses, because you just do your best work, and then you're gone. They, not you, have to suffer the consequences of their bad decisions or horrible code. Think of it as a game where you get paid, regardless of any outcomes, and just have fun.
