Nur kann sich mindestens die Hälfte der Schweizer auch 3.- Gurken leisten. Die andere Hälfte ist es sich ja gewohnt Dreck zu fressen... "He noted his 30,000 square meters of glasshouses at Green Acre Salads business, which supplies major supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons, are shuttered because costs outpace market prices. In fact, the farmer would be losing money if he were to grow."

@CapitalB industrial ag is a death sentence in the end. It cannot produce cheap food without cheap fuel.

@Misterm I agree in the case of standard cucumbers (!) in Britain (!!) and in the long term. But not in general and not during the next 50 years. There is a huge difference between corn in the Rhine plains, "the sea of glass" in Spain or what grew 100 years ago. There are programs to replenish soils again. This can and should be done as long as fuel is cheap.Of course Technik = used exogene energy; the more the more industry. This is tautological.

@CapitalB @Misterm i think we need to return, at least partially, to food-patterns of the old days again. stuff from around the globe isn't tasty anyway, and i don't mind eating kale, potatoes and apples in the winter. the only question is if this change happens by choice or by force due to missing resources.like you've written, it would be wise to use the resources to fix agriculture while they are still available :)

@CapitalB re: using regenerative farming techniques and diesel powered machinery, I agree. For example, every farm could reduce nitrogen inputs by at least 30% just by using hunates to chelate synthetic nitrogen into bioavailable form. Using natural gas to heat massive greenhouses such as the ones in this article to produce low nutrient density food, is not economically or ecologically viable. And it's unnecessary for human health and prosperity to boot. I think we agree.

@bonifartius @CapitalB agreed. I have been eating this way for over a decade and never once felt I was missing out. If anything, I've felt richer and more nourished. From my experience in the realm of agriculture the past 14 years, we have shot ourselves in the foot to produce mass quantities of low quality food and atomized agriculture across the globe because fuel has been so cheap. It has eroded our health and local economies, and least not our soils and ecosystems.

@Misterm @bonifartius Micheal Pollan wrote once Do only eat what your great-grand-mother would deem food. Not a precise guidance bit very, very handy. This and eat less, mostly plants. Think a while about it. Strawberries in February? So simple. Way better and simpler than eat the bug XD

@Misterm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humic_substanceAt this point biogas is the way to go since plasrics are everywhere. Someday we figure out how to recycle biomass more. Also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta
