@BowsacNoodle This is a similar story with coyotes on farms and ranches. The more you kill them, they shorten their gestation period and have larger litters. It also selects for the most rogue temperament, so that in the end, people are unwittingly increasing the likelihood of predation via coyotes by actively killing them. Now if only we were taught to think in systems...

@KellyS hadn't thought of fashion, but that is for sure a part of a the mixture. I saw an ad promoting "period products" for "all genders" yesterday. It made my stomach turn a little bit.

@CapitalB re: using regenerative farming techniques and diesel powered machinery, I agree. For example, every farm could reduce nitrogen inputs by at least 30% just by using hunates to chelate synthetic nitrogen into bioavailable form. Using natural gas to heat massive greenhouses such as the ones in this article to produce low nutrient density food, is not economically or ecologically viable. And it's unnecessary for human health and prosperity to boot. I think we agree.

@bonifartius @CapitalB agreed. I have been eating this way for over a decade and never once felt I was missing out. If anything, I've felt richer and more nourished. From my experience in the realm of agriculture the past 14 years, we have shot ourselves in the foot to produce mass quantities of low quality food and atomized agriculture across the globe because fuel has been so cheap. It has eroded our health and local economies, and least not our soils and ecosystems.

@Viking @AwnryAble I've been making cider for 14 years and never used any clearing agents, always relying on time and temperature. What temp did it ferment at? The juice extraction method also plays a difference. For example, the first ciders I made using a masticating juicer had tons of solids and took ages to clear. Since I upgraded to a rack and cloth system, much less solids end up in the juice, thus less stuff to stay suspended.

@Viking @AwnryAble nice. Yes, patience is key. I ferment at ambient temperature for 6 months at least, sometimes longer depending on what I'm going for. As long as you keep oxygen out, you can ferment and age for quite a while to help clear the ferment.

@SeaRobb they will never supplant oil, gas and coal primarily due to cost and probably ultimately the fact that they can neither generate a base load or be ramped up to cover peak load. In my mind, we're looking at a future of rationing of fuel and electricity as geopolitical and geological limits pan out.
