Took a bit of time to write down my opinions on #libadwaita https://blog.brixit.nl/the-end-of-the-nice-gtk-button/

@martijnbraam small typo: "downside of having of having some of the worst".I still have to look properly at it, but some apps Ive seen the buttons are differnet backround colour (still flat tho).Would a solution having a non-flat fork of adwaita? 🤔Lets see what more involves people have to say about it, but you have valid points.

@minkiu I think it makes sense to split off the nice layout widgets (that are invisible) from libadwaita and the extremely opinionated theming stuff

@martijnbraam i always got the feeling that by bundling them, they were implying: "if you want to theme, start from this" but again, mostly ignorant of the ins and thats my personal extrapolation... but oh well.

@martijnbraam This is a really nuanced and well written take on the subject.Regarding the community, this topic is toxic on both sides of the discourse. Especially the Solus folks have been pretty … "unprofessional" about this, but they're not the only ones

@martijnbraam the libadwaita apps not at least switching to a dark variant is super annoying. I'd be happy with Adwaita/Adwaita dark being the only supported themes for Gnome if we could also set the accent color. I need a dark theme paired with green accents. I've got that mostly working set with the green Adwaita Color variant theme I found on Gnome-look.

@martijnbraamThere is a "raise" css class for buttons in libawaita to unflatten them.

@martijnbraam you made a green AMOLED theme, yes? would that work with other distros as well if copied into the themes folder or is it somehow pmOS dependent?

@jawsh the theme has 4 variants, adwaita green, adwaita dark green, adwaita oled green and adwaita paper green.Should work perfectly fine on any distro, I'm also using it on arch

@martijnbraamHowever you want I guess? Every toolkit comes with a default theme, as a developer you can make your apps look however you want. Lots of people dislike the GTK 3 theme. There is already a discussion about borderless buttons.https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libadwaita/-/issues/228Where did you send your feedback?

@martijnbraamEverybody on that issue, designers and developers agree that there is a problem with the flat buttons. It only took searching for "flat" in libadwaita issues to find it.

@martijnbraam I hate flat themes too, so count me in the madmen club. It's like we live in a 2D world now. Who cares about readability and usability, right? 🤦‍♀️

@martijnbraam Interesting thoughts, I think there's room to talk about it. I love the new libadwaita look, but I can understand your point and I think there's something to it.Not sure what the right direction forward would be here, tho.

@minkiu @martijnbraam Or uh, let users choose a theme that fits their personal taste instead of hardcoding it into a library and telling anyone who doesn't like it to fork off?

@be I think the belief is since 90% devs are awfull at design they want to provide a baseline with the toolkit, at the end libadwaita is a collection of widgets + theme, nothing stops you from reimplementing that widget you are after, right?I am not against you, just playing devil's advocate.@martijnbraam

@minkiu @be yes, true. But I feel like forking off libadwaita and making my own widget collection that's adwaita without the theme parts is a huge waste of time and ideally this would have some upstream solution, like the ability to not load the theming parts of libadwaita

@martijnbraam i also don't like flat design. it feels as it has no values, being too liberal, want to please everyone. it fit's google, but not @gnome games on the other hands are more mature, are not safe-for-work and provoke emotions and often have a more physical theme, even for UI. but newer games also use the now modern Glassmorphism stylei like the current design of @elementary OS which is very clean and elegant with a bit of dimension (3D buttons, slight gradients)
