By far the best upgrade for Windows 10 is Linux Mint (https://linuxmint.com/download.php). Properly divorce yourself from your dysfunctional co-dependent relationship with the Microsoft Corporation and become your best digital you.

@lightweight I showed #LinuxMint to my dad a few days ago as an alternative to windows. Background: he knows very little about computers, even inside Windows. His reply? "Wow, this feels exactly like Windows, only so much faster. How does it do that?"After this experiment, Mint remains 100% my recommendation for beginners.

@kzimmermann yeah, Mint's only fault is lack of marketing budget (so they can compete with Microsoft's "marketing co-payment" model for computer OEMs, which, with along with pre-installed crapware, provides OEMs with most of their margins.

@kzimmermann @lightweight I'd say it was good for power users too.

@lightweight I switched my 75yo mom over to mint w/ cinnamon from win10 after she complained about not being able to use her PC anymore cus it was so slow. I recorded the process for HPR planning to post it, but she adapted so quickly that it was only a few minutes long. She loves it

@greenpete 100% - like pretty much any good distro. That's for me the greatest power of Linux distros: it may hold your hand if you wish, but if you want to part ways and go full power-user, it doesn't patronize you!Flexibility or prearrangement of a distro != measure of how powerful it is @lightweight

@kzimmermann @lightweight as long as your dad isn't required by others (job, govt, friends who wanna play the same game, etc.) to run some particular proprietary software, that sounds great

@wolf480pl exactly! And thankfully, my dad needs nothing more than a secure browser and a place to store his files. Mint offers the most frictionless switching opportunity for him so far, and the security and speed boosts are great@lightweight

@kzimmermann @lightweight I have nothing against Mint users, but I prefer Fedora. Fresh software, fresh kernels, and you don't really need to use GNOME3—I use the MATE spin. `dnf system-upgrade` has just worked for me flawlessly for over five years. It's nothing like the "break everything every release" distro it (arguably) once was.

@lightweight If your hardware supports it, Trisquel gives a UX comparable to Mint (using their Mate desktop as the default interface), without any requirement for proprietary driver blobs in the Linux kernel.HNode is a good place to find out about hardware that is compatible with free code, and to upload reports on how your own hardware performs: https://h-node.org/#Trisquel #Mint #Linux #LinuxLibre #BinaryBlobs
