Do you think it would it be possible to build an ethical algorithmically sorted timeline for Mastodon?

@z sure, the unethical nature of most algorithmic timelines is the black box/engagement-driven nature, not merely the non-chronological-ness

@shadowfacts So how would you sort it? Do you think that ML but optimizing for loftier goals like “well being” instead of “engagement” is possible?

@z I think anything ML is too black-box to be ethical, putting aside the question of how can a computer possibly understand "well being"most of the non-engagement-driven options I can think of off the top of my head are more deliberate and less abstract ("try to show posts that are ____").like, say A, B, and C are having a conversation and you follow A, B, and a bunch of other people that follow C. maybe C's posts should also show up in your timeline. this is on the theory that the transitive follows are probably a more accurate signal of potential interest than "engagement" in any form

@z @shadowfacts with toots, since we have vehemently eschewed quote retoots as a platform, there should be the idea of one object right? I think there's still this tendency for people who came of age on the internet pre Timelines and infinite scroll to have an Inbox 0 mentality toward consuming posts.

@rubah @z i definitely did not come of age on the pre-timeline internet, and i'm very much a completionistcan't say for certain i'm not mad, though

@z @shadowfacts Mayhap what is needed is a "read" indicator, and this isn't necessarily done server side since I think vbulletin has explored the outer limits of storing read post history in databases. Your read data honestly belongs on your device, and maybe not even persisted for too long. What I'd like is to theoretically reach the end of content without too much duplication. Use the same API calls, but filter out object IDs in my personal "read" history
