@carcinopithecus that has got to be the most esoteric way to assess this metric I've ever seen. Also, jealous of you still having a 2007 model to maintain. My 2009 one passed away shortly ago in a way that not even Linux can fix it (motherboard fried :( )

@kzimmermann This computer was purchased in 2015, I think, and uses an architecture that was first released in 2012. So it's about 10 years behind the state-of-the-art. And still going pretty strong.I use it for multimedia work, so it's pretty heavy work on a 8-core AMD FX series CPU and 16 GB RAM.I have a couple of laptops from the 2000s that I'm planning to refurbish and use. They're more like 15-20 years old, but should be fine for low-impact stuff.

@kzimmermann I'd say it depends. I have 15 years laptop and it has its use as a Raspberry PI coding workstation. Another one have been retired recently being 10 year old. The main laptop I use for work is never older than 5 years.PS: I've answered 10 as usually it feels like old at that point.

@kzimmermann Depends on the use case, since that determines what is the expected/comfortable level of performance. For games, 5 years is a fair amount. For internet browsing? 10 years. 20 years if idk you live inside the terminal but aren't a programmer or something

@lig good point. Also DDR3 RAM sticks are super cheap nowadays, which combined with early 2010s 64bit machines makes it super easy to upgrade.

@cirno yeah, it's very easy to take an 10+ year-old machine, slap some lightweight distribution and take a picture of it after running neofetch, proudly announcing how Linux is clearly superior. But pressure yourself into daily driving it for a month and the answer might be very different. It's sad, but I no longer can imagine using my 2006 dell D620 (oldest piece of computer hardware anyone in my family owns today) as my sole workhorse today.

@cirno (I *did* daily-drive it for pretty much everything as late as 2017, though)On the other hand, good thing I'm a fan of older but fun free software games like OpenArena, this way my gaming requirements stay comfortably low!

@kzimmermann I think the longest I used a computer was for 7 years, and I only stopped because it broke, and it was faster to buy a new one than scour the used market for replacement parts.Luckily for me, my performance requirements haven't changed in the past decade (still playing the same games lol), so I could probably go back to it right now just fine.

@kzimmermann I have to admit, I don't use it as my daily driver. I can use it for normal things like editing documents with LibreOffice or browsig the web with one or two tabs in Firefox. It's actually not *that* slow, all things considered.@computertruhe

@kzimmermann I usually (try to) replace the battery and some other stuff, like thermal pads and sell the laptop again. It's not that much about battery life, but price you can get by selling that dropps to almost nothing if you hit the 2,5year line for some reason but is pretty OK for up to 2years

@fabiscafe nice insights, I had almost not thought about the resale value since for my laptops, I almost always buy (or get them for free) used and with the intention to keep them the longest possible. But your points do shed a very interesting light on the process

@kzimmermann I feel like I should point out that it depends on the use case. For a gamer hardware gets old fairly quickly. My PC is some 6 years old and feels like a potato for AAA games at times.
