AI generated faces have been shown to be more "trustworthy" in surveys. This is interesting in and of itself. Dr Sophie Nightingale, who is a Lecturer in Psychology at Lancaster University in the UK says "It’s just going to get worse if we don’t do something to stop it."I'm curious to hear how she thinks we can "stop" it.This is now. What kind of results are we going to get in ten years? People are going to be able to do better than this on their phones.Thoughts?https://www.newscientist.com/article/2308312-fake-faces-created-by-ai-look-more-trustworthy-than-real-people/

@mike I *think* we should all switch to open source software, but that doesn't mean I know how I can switch everyone :thonking:

@RyuKurisu While I love the line of thought, I'm not sure how that would stop the technology that allows for AI generated faces and deep fakes. To the contrary, open sourcing the tech would just let everybody do it, and probably make it better than closed source options.

@mike AI generated faces look more "average" than a true human face in my experience. I wouldn't be able to tell them apart but AI faces rarely have the "blemishes" and asymmetries that most people have. My guess is that this somehow communicates trustworthiness to the human looking at the images.

@mike I for one hope that governmens realize that CO2 compensation is pointless, and so these server intensive tasks become obsolete.I was already scared about this technology when an AI generated video of Obama started circling the internet. It keeps getting worse.

@mike Hah the article literally makes the same pointI should learn to read better lol> That might be because synthetic faces look more like “average” human faces, and people are more likely to trust typical-looking faces, she says.

@jiminycricket The interesting thing is that it's not necessarily "average". Feature uniformity is one of the things psychologists have pointed to as something that makes faces attractive. Sorta side note: I used to work for a gaming company that had a Psychology department whose job it was to determine how to get people to play more and longer. I could see something similar in the future for AI generated spokespeople. Entire departments of people trying to game the human mind with AI.

@mike Make it a built in requirement in all software that all AI generated faces wear a monocle and speak in the Mid-Atlantic accent. At minimum it would be entertaining. But seriously, it will be very difficult to legislate anything at the developmental level of these systems. Which is why I think legislation will end up centering around the profit motives of the companies backing such systems. At the end of the day, money is the weak point in any system physical or otherwise.

@mike I meant to say that Dr Sophie said we should stop that technology. I read that as "she *thinks* we should stop that technology", but she doesn't (necessarily) know what we can do about it 🙂👍

@RyuKurisu Ahh, I see. Missed that, sorry. Still, switching everybody to open source software seems outright attainable compared to stopping technology from moving forward. That feels more inline with, "I think we should all reduce our carbon footprint by learning how to fly by flapping our arms so we don't need cars."

@mike Every time I get a robocall about "my credit card", or from the "gov/t dept of revenue", or from "border services", and note how easy it is to tell it is a fraudulent call - I also think things are going to be a whole lot worse when these voices become more believable. : -(

@mike @jiminycricket was going to comment this: Humans are pretty dumb. Your brain automatically and unconsciously attributes "Pretty" => Trustworthy even though this is unlikely to be true. It's why most politicians are least somewhat conventionally attractive, regardless of their beliefs.
