I am afraid the fediverse is going to be just another IRC looking at the consumerbase of the fediverse.

I agree @crashglasshouses @ChrisTalleras this mopey attitude of picking pointless in things isn't helping anybody.I can only speak for myself, but my #Fediverse timeline is pretty vibrant and healthy looking.I'm not sure what's been happening with you lately my friend, but please, chill a little dude. Take a break if you need to.

@crashglasshouses @ChrisTalleras To be fair, it's February, one of the most dismal months of the year, people are still feeling the Christmas overspent, failed new years resolutions, shitty weather, heating bills going up, short days and putting up with everyone experiencing the same.We just gotta make it 'till spring.

@ChrisWereIt's more that I see who regurarely uses the fediverse arent common people, they are usually are a part of some very niché cultural group that often is more radical in their thinking.A lot of the platforms like hubzilla are made for people who also glorifies stuff like IRC.Users of the fediverse make a point to distance themselves to common people. This is not my main account BTW. @crashglasshouses

@ChrisTalleras Each social network has it's niche. I think it's important to remember that most normal people don't use social media, and if they do, it's Facebook.Even Twitter is a niche bubble. It's just a media bubble rather than a tech bubble.Tiktok is for the youngsters, Snapchat is for the sexual predators, Instagram is for people who like to take pictures of their food. We all have our homes of the web, and that's okay.

@ChrisWereAnd I don't mean the gatekeeping only. But since its a defragmented internett hobby movement there is no filtering of who represents the community, misinformation and populism is rampant and most of the community consists of what I'd call LARPersThis has given me a lot of dispair over why Ive put so much into it when its only going to be squandered. @crashglasshouses

@ChrisTalleras @crashglasshouses It's okay and normal to feel like that. It's okay to take some time out to readjust and refocus.I see some promising things happening here in Wales. History moves in fits and starts and have all had their infighting. We passionate and argumentative and that's not unique to us.The fight is long, and burn-out is real. Look after yourself.

@ChrisWereIt's not some february depression. It's a feeling of somewhat wrath towards the community and dispair in that something that Ive been so into since I was like 18 is so brokenI'm probably in my happiest point in my life so far, but i've lost all entjusiasm for opensource what so ever. And it seems like people are a bit clouded regarding this cricism that I have. @crashglasshouses

@ChrisWereSorry for all the messages. But as futile as these messages are I feel opensource is just as futile, and that this is a huge conversation that opensource needs to have with itself, particurarily community participants that are organized and have a role in the more purposeful parts of this community @crashglasshouses

@ChrisTalleras Reading you post and your follow-up comments, here are my thoughts:Yeah, it's pretty much a bunch of niche groups that are often kind of fringe in some way. However, it's also the latest evolution in the tradition and heritage that came before it: BBS, Usenet, Mailing Lists, IRC, and Forums. Indeed, the fediverse is really just a bunch of forums all bridged together with a modern interface on top. Every boon and every pitfall from this heritage is present here today. However, this is not a bad thing. Our apps and platforms are pretty good now. In some cases, good enough to rival corporate platforms. Some people are doing hard work trying to figure out how to deal with the root problems that affect this network. That stuff takes time, effort, and experimentation to see what works. It also involves working together in the spirit of cooperation, which can be pretty messy sometimes. Every network has growing pains.I use the fediverse for fun. I keep coming back every day because there are funny, weird, crazy people on it all doing their own thing, being themselves, and sharing what they're feeling, what they love, and what they're working on. Every now and then, I'll feel a little burned out, and take a break, but I always end up coming back. This place is my home on the web.

@sean yes, although its not just a hobby to me. I'd like for things to improve common people's lives, and I'm not so certain anymore if the fediverse will do that.In my experience so far it seems like corporate projects are better at filling common people's needs while community and non-profits tend to be hostile, gatekeepy and are made people unfriendly.

@ChrisTalleras Yeah, I get that. I've pretty much given my life to this stuff since my teenage years. Sometimes, it feels like it has the potential to change the world. Other times, it feels like a project only held together by hobbyists. Both things can be true at the same time - Free Software is often built out of hobby projects that started out as one thing and eventually evolved into something much bigger.I'd make the argument that corporate environments and the communities around their products can be just as comparable. It could also be argued that, in a lot of cases, corporations had the resources and the means to get something to market to fill some kind of need when the rest of us had no means to do so.

@ChrisTalleras I've often wondered if anything I did in my life actually mattered. Sometimes, I worry that every moment was wasted on some stupid ideals and that I've actually accomplished nothing. Maybe my involvement even made things worse in some way. But, I keep on with it because being here gives me a sense of community, and a sense of belonging. Part of what even motivates me to try to program and do design work is to continue building for this network, and for Free Sodtware, and for the Commons. I'd love fame and money in return for this work, but ultimately I'm only really doing this for myself and my ideals.

@ChrisTalleras I'll part with this: there's no guarantee that any of my work will succeed. But, if I can somehow make a part of the fediverse good enough that my friends and family will switch to it, then I'll at least have freed a bunch of people from some of the most predatory corporate networks known to mankind.

@hypolite @ChrisTalleras Aww, thank you, but I was just making a point here. ❤️I think the "What am I doing with my life? Does any of this matter?" thing is 100% normal, maybe especially so in this niche in which success is not necessarily guaranteed. Like, yeah, we could just end up being the next Usenet, and maybe in like 50 years only a couple of hobbyists stay on it.But, that doesn't mean that the time spent here wasn't good?

@wowaname I sometimes get a kick out of that way of thinking, but I've always liked the idea that people just decide what matters to them personally.Nothing matters, except for all that shit I care about, and the people I care about.

@seanI'm feeling pretty cynical about everything at the moment and also questioning how much of my life I've sunk into tech activism. But then I remind myself of the Marshall Mcluhan quote from the 60s that WW3 will be an information war. In which case working on pro-human tech (including but not limited to the 'verse) is an anti-war project as much as a tech freedom one. @ChrisTalleras@mastodon.art
