@c00lvibrations I buy high bitrate MP3s from this one website, I think 320kbps. It actually does sound fine. No problem playing those on a hifi system. If you have low bitrate mp3s, it's like you're listening to complicated music through a sea shell.

@newt @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations I wasn't even storing the songs in my car stereo, it has a feature that allows it to interact with whatever's on the phone or mp3 player via USB and display what song is currently playing (and even lets you use voice commands to play specific playlists and songs). Not only did it fail to play anything that was a flac, it deleted the playlists of the music app I have installed :angry_bork: , I have no fucking idea why.So I just use bluetooth, but then it can't do the same stuff anymore, it may as well be connected via auxiliary cable.

@lichelordgodfrey @newt @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations FLAC is bloated and, for the amount of space it takes up, and also compared to 320kbps mp3s, the difference in quality is probably not detectable to the human ear.

@WhiteDissidentRadio @newt @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations It's not bloated, it's CD quality audio but compressed to preserve *some* space. What you rip from a CD is going to be way bigger otherwise. It was never meant to be for general use but to preserve an exact copy.Go ahead and keep everything only as mp3s and for whatever reason you have to convert them to this or that format, it'll be shit.

@lichelordgodfrey @newt @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations I mean, the difference between “lossless” and 320kbps mp3 is probably a difference that your ears can’t detect. You should always store a lossless copy of your music, but yeah, flac files weren’t really meant to be portable.

@WhiteDissidentRadio @lichelordgodfrey @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations you totally can, but probably not in regular music. There are certain waveforms that produce artifacts in different codecs. If you put those into your tracks, FLACs will sounds just fine, but in mp3 you'll have your ears bleed :comfygeek: Can't find the research paper on this right now, but it's out there. Also also, if you use bluetooth audio, you would probably want FLAC instead. The reason is, your sounds source has to transcode your music into another lossy codec, usually AAC these days. And transcoding between lossy formats doesn't exactly add quality.

Don’t get them too warm! Don’t put them in an off-balance tape player or it will eat the tape.Cassette tapes are limited in their quality to the equipment it’s being played on. Does anyone you know have a very very good cassette player? I’m gonna assume not because they’re getting very hard to come by.Unlike other formats, the cassette had just too many limitations.

@lichelordgodfrey @newt @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations I agree. The tape hiss does create some fuzzy memories, the click of the tape recording stopping, sure, it’s all nice and fun nostalgia. But getting right to the meat and potatoes, AT BEST, a cassette puts out the equivalent of a 256kbps mp3. At worst, it sounds like shit.

@lichelordgodfrey @WhiteDissidentRadio @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations it's a style thing for me. And I don't add that noise to music myself, of course. But some artists release vinyl records of their works and sometimes I find those more enjoyable. And I would never want all music to sound like that. Only some particular things.

@lichelordgodfrey This sounds like asking “why would you shoot your film on black and white 35mm when true color 8K digital is soooo much higher quality.”No shit UHD digital is better quality, but there's more to a piece of art than obtaining the absolute maximum photo-/audio-realistic quality possible. It's almost as if it was a deliberate decision by the artist(s) that's a massive contributor to the atmosphere and mood of the film, album, photograph, painting, whatever.@konpeito deliberately adds tape hiss and noise to their digital mix-“tapes” because that's a major part of the atmosphere and intended effect that they're trying to convey. Listen to the side without the hiss added and there's a substantial difference in the way it feels when listening.@WhiteDissidentRadio @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations @newt

@nytpu @konpeito @WhiteDissidentRadio @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations @newt ok but the guy in question above was getting it from things that did not intend to have those added in. it was a preference of his, not a thing added by the artist.I don't mind people doing that or artists doing what you said. @lichelordgodfreyMP3 vs FLAC is different, because that's just sometimes bad-sounding lossy encoding vs. needlessly lossless encoding (outside of archival where you want lossless); while taking the time to record something into a physical analog medium is a deliberate decision, at least in the modern day (historically it was obviously by necessity). Rarely have I seen lossy digital compression used for artistic effect, at least in music.@WhiteDissidentRadio @RikaDerufu @c00lvibrations @newt
