Maybe it's time for me to switch from Fibre Broadband to 4G Internet at home? 🤦♂️

@stardot yup. Need to run some tests to see if the latency will be noticeable.

@kev Before you do that, I would take a close look at latency and jitter. Slow and reliable could potentially be better than fast and chaotic.

@redeagle yeah. I have a 4G dongle for work, so I'm gonna hook that up to my router and do some tests.

@redeagle @kev You can do both if you get a modem that can bridge the connections.(I sometimes create a manual failsafe in my home office by plugging my PC into one of the satellites of my mesh network using ethernet, then connecting the wifi to my phone's hotspot...)

@dajbelshaw @redeagle yup. I have a router that supports 4g USB dongles. So I'm gonna do some testing before I commit.

@kev saw the same situation here, really insulting. Though in my case at least I was the one with 4G internet and the other dude had the fiber connection 😆

@kev How is it that fiber is slower than 4G where you are? They're selling gigabit lines here on fiber?

@nathand it's Fibre to the cabinet, not to the house. So it's old copper from there.

@tdarb I pay for "up to" 80Mpbs, but obviously don't get anything close to that. Fibre here in the UK usually means fibre to the cabinet, not the house. From the cab to the house, it's crappy old copper. Fibre to the house isn't available here (even though the cab is like 200m away).

@kev Well there's your problem. Old copper. Gotta upgrade to some of that *new* copper. Only 3 easy payments of $499 (a month).

@kevFrom what i rember from class. Fiber should give you equal upand down speed, but if ypu using copper then the max you can get is usualy something like 20/60, and yes you will never get that speed duo to limitaions of the copper network. So you will be paying for more then what you get. Always. @tdarb

@kev Might be, depending. I get about 40Mbps faster on my phone's 5G connection than my home, but I'm not on Fiber either. There's also other things to take into consideration. For me, it would be data caps and the fact that I have a business line so I can have static IPs and other more business features. Most of those I don't use other than the static. If none of that matters for you, 4G (5G??) might be an option for you. Sounds like your copper is going to be a problem moving forward.

@mike yeah, I do have a static IP too. Which is what caused me to go with the ISP I did. I only use it for my Synology though, and that could be worked around with Synologys DynDNS service.

@kev @jle I've been using mobile broadband for a few years. It works great. I've even been playing FPS games without issues as well.So. It can be good, but it depends on multiple factors of course.

@kev @mike Meanwhile this Brazilian ISP is a CGNAT :(...at least it does surprisingly lease you a globally routable IPv6 address. Now I don't know if it's dynamic or not, but I assume it is?
