a confusion i have about the English words winded/winding:in the phrase “long-winded”, the word “winded” rhymes with “kindred”but in in “wind up” and “winding up”, the word “wind” rhymes with “wine”but yet, in the song “The Long and Winding Road” by The Beatles, where the idea seems to be long-windedness, the word sounds different.i always understood the word long-winded to be a metaphor about things that take a long time to wind up, so i’m really confused. it seems to instead refer to, uh, wind that is long? what? that doesn’t make sense.

@thor@pl.thj.no long-windedness comes from the wind I thought, which sounds one way, and winding comes from winding like a clock, for a road it means it curves this way and that

@evelyn i sort of assumed, for the longest time, that the “windedness” of “long-windedness” came from the same sense of “wind” as roads.

@evelyn a road is a long thing. and as for winding like a clock, i think of circles as being a bit like a curve.

@evelyn by contrast, there is nothing “long” about wind that blows in your face.

@thor@pl.thj.no I assume it means wind as a sort of metaphor for speaking? I'm not actually sure but that's always how I've taken it

@evelyn that’s what i assume now, but boy was i surprised when i learned that, unless most other figures of speech involving “wind”, this one’s about air, not things turning

@evelyn “oh, i get it, it takes a long time to wind. it takes time to wind up the clock. it’s long-winded.” but nope

@thor In English, the phrase "long-winded" refers to having much (sometimes, too much) to say. To speak requires air (wind) in the lungs, and to speak for a long time makes one long-winded. It is related to wind, the movement of air, not wind, a coiled and curving shape.

@evelyn i suppose, though, if it was meant in that sense, it would have been “long-wound”, not “long-winded”

@onan yes, that seems to be the case, and it had me fooled for a long time. most figures of speech involving “wind” refer to coiled/curved things. things that turn. but this one’s a confusing exception.the sense of “wind” being speech is less common in English, in my experience.

@thor No, it means they have a lot of breath -- "wind" -- to speak for a long time. These are two different metaphors that happen to use homonyms. I can understand the confusion.

@TerryHancock the interesting bit about this one is that you can walk the earth, entirely unaware that it refers to wind in that case, and still understand what is meant. like i did for many years.

@thor I believe "long winded" is more 'talking on and on' and boring. It goes along with 'being full of hot air:.

@Algot i was going to mention the “hot air” thingthese idioms are far less common - it makes more sense to assume it’s about things that turn, or curve, like a road, since a road is long.

@Algot the Beatles song says “The Long and Winding Road” and until i knew that long-winded is different, i assumed it was talking about things that take too much time.i didn’t assume it had to be about someone speaking for that reason. i thought something like a process or project could be “long-winded”

@thor I think you are correct: the sense of “wind” being speech is less common in English. There's also "take the wind out of my sails," meaning to have an experience that diminishes enthusiasm.

@thor A long and winding road can be both a problem of taking a while to traverse, but it may also be more interesting because of its meandering path through byways and small towns...unlike a turnpike which allows a person to complete a trip quickly, ignoring the potentially interesting sites we drive by at 90kph or more.

@thor In the context of the Beatles' song, it may be that the long and winding road is a metaphor for always returning from other failed relationship attempts to "the one" right person. There is no connection I can see with being long winded.
