I’m continually amazed by where people choose to plant their flag on environmental issues. It seems like most go after the low hanging fruit and completely ignore more foundational issues in our culture or economic system that give rise to those problems.Yesterday I saw someone raging about how smoking is on the rise with Gen Z. It’s so bad for the environment, it’s icky, it’s smelly, and so on…Let’s ignore the thoughtlessness of someone who thinks addicts consciously feed their addiction for a minute. What about the device you used to tweet that? Were the rare earth elements needed to manufacture it mined in an eco-friendly way? When the materials for the battery in your electric/hybrid car were mined in South America, shipped to China for processing, shipped to Japan to manufacture the actual battery, then shipped to the factory in North America for assembly, was that a zero net carbon process? Or, did it produce more waste than a smoker could ever possibly create in her entire life?At this point I feel like I’ve ironically fallen into the trap of blaming other individuals for relatively small problems while larger issues threaten all of us, but I hope my point wasn’t lost in the process. Attacking your neighbors instead of going after the source of the problem is exactly what polluters want. It’s a smokescreen they’ve contrived to keep us busy while they continue doing business as usual.#pollution #climate #climatechange #smoking #cigarettes

Unironically, if you think this post made me seem like a proselytizing jackass then I’ve either convinced you, or you already agreed. ;)

@b6hydra 6 years of smoking cigerettes, 1 pack a day, would be equivelant in CO2 emissions to an iPhone 8’s production and use over its lifetime. That doesnt account for other environmental impact of cigarettes such as the land use or the burden ont he medical system, So overall I’d say they are likely somewhat comparable in terms of impact, cigerettes may even be worse.

@freemo I can see that. Do you happen to have a link? I’d be curious to know where they mark the start of the production process. Is it at the Apple plant, or does it include the harvesting of raw materials and manufacturing required to produce the component parts? That specific statement was referring to the previous one on car manufacturing, but it’s worth noting. Thanks for keeping me honest.

@b6hydraSource for iPhone is no longer up (404) but cited the iphones carbon footprint for production and lifetime use at 68 kg.Source used to be here:https://glyde.com/blog/2019/08/25/why-choose-used-smartphones/Carbon footprint is 1.39 per cigarette according to this source:https://palebluedot.llc/carbon-copy/2015/10/14/the-carbon-footprint-of-cigarettes
