Why is there no Mastodon "official" App for Android like there is for iOS ? This would probably decrease the barrier of entry for a lot of people on Android

@metalune I see no problem with that. The whole #Fediverse is about decentralization. So it suits me to give users a free choice of apps as well. Of course, an official app doesn't ban alternative apps, but it does determine how the Fediverse is perceived by inexperienced users.All I think is needed is a recommendation as to which app is best for whom.

@metalune having an "official" app for a decentralized platform seem extremely antithetical to what we're trying to do here. And at risk of sounding gatekeepy, it weeds out a great amount of the enterprising toxicity that chased us to a decentralized platform in the first place. While I love the promise and environment of Mastadon, it is an astronomically better platform with the slow trickle of who figures it out than the deluge of viral new social spaces. #foss #decentralization #mastodon

@gnomad108 still would make sense to have one app to cling to as a default, it's not about weeding out other apps at all, and then again you still have to figure out the server you want to go for

@metalune @gnomad108 I think an official app can help to make more people join (for non-technical people the lack of an official app can be a barrier that feels bigger than it really should be).However, I hope these official apps won't result in few people using all the other clients. Because the wide app diversity is probably healthy to Mastodon. Some of these apps might add interesting features that Mastodon lacks (follow hashtags), which in turn can inspire the core devs of Mastodon.

@metalune @gnomad108 Of course we can create issues on their GitHub for suggestions, but they won't (and shouldn't) implement new features just because one or two random people want it 😅 They need to see that there is a need for it, and a big diversity of apps definitely helps for that!I think people will still keep using all sorts of Mastodon clients anyway though 😁 Because that's how the amazing people here on Mastodon tend to be.

@sigsegv @gnomad108 I also don't think that we should push mastodon.social as the official instance or shit like that but rather maybe have a dropdown where you can select from a small or big pre-set list of instances which you could then search for criteria and such

But as I said, I'm not too pessimistic about it either.

@metalune @sigsegv How Facebook puts everybody into a echo chamber and how I started to think the world looked a specific way, when I was only seeing a small part of the bigger picture. I began to believe that I was part of an ethical majority and that anyone who disagreed was somehow "wrong" or "evil," without giving time or credence as to the why they disagree.

@gnomad108 @metalune well, I have to admit: Even though I consider myself quite tech literate I can easily feel overwhelmed when I am faced with large amounts of information that is completely new to me. My first meeting with the Fediverse (which was the Wikipedia article) was a bit like that. Luckily joinmastodon.com, FediTips, FediFollows and others are there to help newbies now 😁

@sigsegv @gnomad108 yeah, most of us seem to have had a similar experience to yours, I was kinda lucky to have a dad which put Debian on my laptop at quite a young age so I didn't have to fiddle with DE's WM's or any of that, and I just found out about them naturally when I tried to change some stuff and I just learned about them as the first thing (which btw proves to me that if you'd introduce everybody to this open concept at a young age they'd just get it)

You just need to start using some distro and then get familiar with it over time.In my case I was just curious about Linux and wanted to get more familiar with it, and thought Wikipedia would be a good place to start educating myself. I gave up and came back a year or two later - out of demand actually! My ancient laptop's hard drive was broken, and I needed it for some uni work. I got it to work by running Lubuntu from an USB 😁
