Is it "somebody else's computer"...if you are personal friends with and trust this specific "somebody else"?

@urusan I feel like I’m missing context.

@IslandUsurper The full quote is "There is no cloud, it's just someone else's computer."I can't find the source and quick searches are filled with media mouthpieces of the tech titans writing opinion articles debunking this notion.

@urusan I feel like the original quote -- "the cloud is just someone else's computer" -- is more of a reminder that "the cloud" is still, in the end, physical hardware that someone needs to maintain and can be down/lose data/be hacked -- and not some magical thing that provides these services with perfect reliability or security.

@urusan :blobcatfacepalm: oh of course. I stand by my vote, because of course it’s still not your computer.

@urusan It's "somebody you trust's computer". I don't know the context, but I'd probably advise going ahead & using it. Might reduce waste that way!

@urusan I mean technically yeah but in the sense of the meaning of that phase I feel that a lot has changed from a random data center in who-knows-where to; you know the hardware, the network, the person, the location, etc. Is it perfect? No. Is it way better than the "cloud"? Dang right!

@urusan It's always someone else's computer unless you have both physical access to it and the ability to make changes to the system.

@urusan I have a feeling that, just as trust is a scale, somebody-elseness also is.I would let my neighbor run my poetry website, but not my backup server.
