I haven't burned a CD in so long that I couldn't remember the name of the utility to burn CDs.Now I'm burning a Debian 11 i386 disc for installation on a dual PII.#retrocomputing #debian

So it turns out that the Debian i386 netinst installer requires > 256 MB of RAM to install. THE NETINST ISO. With 256 MB of RAM the graphical installer crashes with a cryptic message about "unable to copy", the non-graphical installer shows an error that it needs more RAM to continue, and the expert installer hangs silently.a) How did we arrive at this dystopian juncture?b) It's been a long time since I installed Debian fresh, the installer is actually really nice.c) WHY?????

The netinst installer doesn't ask all of its questions up front, though, which is annoying. It stopped after half an hour or so to ask me what debian mirror I wanted to use, then again ten or so minutes later to ask about popularity-contest.

@elb Sheeesh! For my curiosity, though, what was your reason for using Debian i386 as opposed to, say, Slackware?

@publius This is a utility workstation install, and my "regular" distro of choice is Debian. I have built up a media transfer box that has a removable IDE HDD tray, Zip drive, 3.5" and 5.25" floppies, 50- and 68-pin external SCSI (with enclosures), CD-ROM, etc., and this Debian installation is for imaging and writing disks. (It also has BeOS 4.5 for handling Mac disks, and FreeDOS for ImageDisk.)I have Slack on a Pentium 166 MMX for "retrocomputing" flavor, of course. It could've been Slack.

@elb reminds me of my history with NSLU2 devices, at some point the Debian installer would no longer run on its 32MB of RAM and you had to download a tar ball of the base system: https://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/install/
