Today was fun! I managed to completely destroy my #MacOS user profile by deleting a single folder.https://kevq.uk/i-broke-my-apple-profile-by-deleting-a-folder#moa

@kev Well, damn. If you'd have told me that in passing conversation, I'd had not believed you either. lol. That sucks.

@kev That happened to me at work a few years ago. I would have expected that to be fixed by now. Lol… I had to use the recovery partition, mount the OS partition, and create the folder so I could log back in.

@kev Did you have iCloud Drive enabled and syncing your Desktop/Documents folders with it? `System Preferences > Apple ID . iCloud Drive > Options... > Desktop & Documents Folders`. It *may* be the cause. Not that finder or the OS should break for something like that, but since everything Apple is so tightly coupled together I wouldn't be surprised.

@fmartingr hmmmm yeah - that might be it actually. I do have it enabled, even though I don't use iCloud really. But I do tend to use Downloads as a dumping ground, so it's good to have it synced just in case.Good idea!

@kev that last paragraph is something that everyone should remember"Anyway, the moral of the story is this, dear reader - don’t piss about with the file system on a machine that you use every day for work. Pretty obviously in hindsight. 🙃"🤣 At least you got it all working again.

@kev I’m curious, do you have iCloud Drive enabled on your MacBook? I wonder if there’s some combination of that, and the APFS data volumes that caused the full blown finder meltdown.

@richards yeah, I think it may have been that. A number of people have mentioned iCloud as the culprit.
