@veer66 Yes, new user coming from macOS. I tried Ubuntu (was too heavy for my laptop) and Trisquel (reminded me of winXP). I use Debian 11 with GNOME desktop environment.

Yes and it even has other GNU utils but it's used like web browser with pwas without any native applications other than browser itself.Technically a GNU Linux but practically not.

@veer66 Debian. Because it's stable and beautiful. Perfect for getting things done. It's easy, mainstream and without too much distraction. New users are overwhelmed with distros, let's keep it simple.

@veer66 honestly I have no single answer for everyone since the first distro I’d recommend heavily depends on technical expertise, whenever someone is helping out, what desktops are they used to and even what the hardware isbtw Musl Void is not GNU

@veer66 depends on their needs, how they use their computer, and how tech savvy they are. If they just check webmail and work on office documents, maybe Ubuntu or Mint. If they have an advanced gaming rig with bleeding edge hardware, they probably need something with a newer kernel, like Fedora or Manjaro. Is their computer an appliance, or is it a special thing? Do they actually like using a computer?

@txt_file I assume that you will install the OS for a user and a user will use a web mail, Zoom, Google Meet, LINE, Whatsapp, LibreOffice or (online) Collabora Office, a printer, Facebook Messenger, YouTube, and MS Teams.

@veer66 I'd say anything that uses gnome would be suitable for new users. Ubuntu would be good because of the amount of resources available for it (it's easy to quickly perform a web search for a possible problem), but personally I would recommend fedora because I found it to be a more up to date and stable operating system. Not sure if that holds up to actual research though, just for my hardware it did :)

@xerz @veer66 Agreed, without an idea of what previous experience your "new user" has and what they intend to use the machine for, there's not much between many of the options.I'd say "if it's preinstalled" - so perhaps Pop!_OS, Ubuntu or Elementary Os for some devices.Otherwise you can't go wrong with any of the Debian derivatives TBH.
