Hard pass. I will not use #passkeys and will tell my friends and family to do the same.So long as attestation part of the WebAuthn spec, it allows companies to lock consumers into using specific passkey managers. It's exactly like streaming subscriptions. Attestation sets up the dystopia of a paid 1Password account for your email passkey, a paid LastPass account for your utility account passkey, a paid Bitwarden account for your health insurance, etc.#passwordshttps://www.ncsc.gov.uk/blog-post/passkeys-not-perfect-getting-better

The fact that #Ubuntu #Linux disabled the GRUB timeout will always amaze me.> "Let's build an enterprise operating system and make it difficult for system administrators to troubleshoot boot problems."Yes, I'm aware I can change it. It's the fact that Canonical thought this was a good idea that boggles my mind.</rant>

#Ubuntu is moving away from GNU coreutils to Rust-based uutils coreutils with Ubuntu 25.10. There are two big differences with this move:1. uutils coreutils is MIT licensed, not GPL.2. Obviously, it's written in Rust, a memory-safe compiled language, unlike C.IMO, this is a good move.https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/carefully-but-purposefully-oxidising-ubuntu/56995#gnu #rust #linux

@cks Agreed. I haven't looked over the source code, but 100% compatibility is an optimistic claim I think. GNU coreutils is 35 years old. That's a long time for one-off quirks to get implemented for all sorts of edge cases.

@hyperreal I'm just salty right now. I was told I was mansplaining when I was asked a question by the accuser. It's an insult that just stops all discussion and it's easily abused. Too often, I've seen it being used in polite conversation where it was uncalled for and unjustified. There are more polite and tactful ways to invite a male to stop talking than resorting to sexist insults.

Honestly, I'm surprised that Best Buy has stayed afloat as long as they have.Aside from competing with other big stores like Walmart and Target, they also have to compete with online heavyweights like Amazon.Geek Squad was the human factor that customers want when needing tech support. Something that Walmart and Target don't really excel in and something websites like Amazon completely lack. With Geek Squad folding, the days are numbered IMO.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-24/best-buy-s-latest-layoffs-hit-geek-squad-team

@stiefkind I did something similar when I was a Red Hat instructor/examiner using mdraid and LVM back in 2008-2010.It wasn't as simple as "zpool export" and "zpool import" (RHEL doesn't support ZFS), but the general idea was the same.1. Setup RAID, LVM, fs.2. Mount and write data.3. Unmount, tear down LVM and RAID.4. Shuffle drives.5. Reinsert and reassemble.6. Mount and read data.Always a fun demo to make. These were the exact USB drives I used. 2 GB PNY drives with sheaths removed.

I try to shop local when I can, so I've had a local #coffee subscription for a few years.I just found out recently that a running friend of mine has his own coffee roasting side business, so I ordered some coffee from him.Turns out, he's also a #Linux nerd and software developer. He has his own Matrix server running in his house bridging a number of different texting services.Definitely going to have more to talk about at future club runs.#running #runnersOfMastodon
