I'm trying to understand whether this was the plan from the beginning: for social media companies to start out advertising themselves as open to pretty much everyone, and then, after becoming popular, to censor feminist (and perhaps other undesired political) views. What Twitter, Instagram, and other tech companies are doing wouldn't be a problem if they were open about it from the beginning, advertising themselves as anti-feminist websites where men could come to be protected from feminist content. What's incredibly insidious is that they made themselves the "go-to" sites for everyone before they started banning feminists. (Twitter didn't ban Meghan Murphy until 2018.)

I don't think it was planned at all. They seriously did not consider, since most of the creators of these media led very sheltered male-centric lives, how powerful female voices could be, so the clampdown was entirely reactive.

That plus “entryism” - certain factions realised how powerful social media platforms were becoming as means of influencing/distorting the political process, and deliberately infiltrated them behind the scenes - not just at the level of rule-setting, but at the level of algorithmic manipulation.

Not sure if it was planned at the beginning but it's obvious platforms such as the birdie hellsite probably didn't have a clear concept of where they wanted to take it till they were big enough to start imposing conduct it wanted to see in their users. For sure as well, along the way, they got investors who surely made *cough cough* suggestions on how the platform should be...You can't be choosy when you only have a handful of thousands of users but when you've got many dozens and hundreds even of millions of users, the dilemma is not the same and your tightrope is much wider then.

That makes a lot of sense. They only started censoring when censorship became the profitable thing to do, for one reason or another. A brand new company, unless it was never meant to be profitable (or popular), cannot be nearly as choosy.

Yeah I mean I had joined Twitter in 2007, I think, it was relatively new and along the years I saw a change happen in the timeline, then I noticed they were putting in place *rules* that were more and more anti-women and anti-reality, if I can say it like that. I doubt very much they could have played crazy like that at the beginning, it never would have lifted off the ground, with that plus limitations in characters in tweets, etc. When they open themselves to investors, they have to lean a certain way the investors appreciate and are encouraged to get involved in

The idea that *anything* in the current stew of tech development and the social fallout from it was *planned* is...........hilarious. The whole thing is moving too fast for anyone to do anything other than make a few best guesses, hold on tight and try to cash in. "Move fast and break things" really is the creed - a toddler-level fascination with creative destruction and barely anything more grown up to temper it. There's almost nothing intentional there at all.

I have a feeling you are right. Right wing males won't idly stand by forever, especially if MRAs' voices get louder and louder.
