RT @ahopeross@twitter.comGreat thread. When Kenney tells you he’s all for oil and gas workers he means the ones in the downtown offices. His government is letting down those working on the rigs. https://twitter.com/yyccowboy/status/1482064334637334532πŸ¦πŸ”—: https://twitter.com/ahopeross/status/1482395606328823812

@atrus I don't think the general public in Alberta fully understands what is going on up there. On one hand there is a lot of pressure put on workers to keep the oilsands operating at (it is VERY expensive and time consuming to shut down and start up steam gens, etc in the winter) but at the same time the oil companies have REALLY stepped up to fill the gap in pandemic management. The government has abdicated their responsibility almost totally. Much or most of testing (PCR and rapid), contact tracing, isolation quarters etc. is being provided by the oil companies, at their expense, and they are over their heads and their mandate from above is to prioritise maximising recovery to minimise lost work time over mental well being.Compounding this is the logistical and cultural challenges of vaccinating people up there..vaccination rates are very low and macho "rig-pigs" are too insecure to wear masks or get vaccinated lest they appear weak or scared.I am really glad I got out of there.
