@futurebird If you keep the top you can have a nice house plant too (or garden plant if your climate allows). That is how I justify the cost of the occasional fresh pineapple, plus the blooms they make are kinda unreal!

@neauoire I am not aware of any version of BASIC where the middle one is even possible because every BASIC I am aware of strips leading whitespace on all line numbers or labels, so the right one if the platform allows otherwise the left one

@futurebird teaching as a profession has long suffered a lack of respect overall. I really wish that was not the case because a lot of important perspectives are being ignored. When I was a kid we had kids with ADHD, kids with FAS, kids on the autism spectrum, all of it at pretty much the rates we see today...anecdotally that really hasn't changed in the last half century I think. And though we did have Resource Rooms in schools back then what *has* changed is how we manage such challenges. All those kids would be all handled much more uniformly as "remedial students" and more often sequestered from the regualr classrooms, and almost derisively these kids would be called things like "hyper", "difficult", "emotional", "slow" and worse. If you are in, or know people in teaching or childcare or social work (all tragically undervalued) you know these kids have *always* been there, they just have not really been seen.

@futurebird there is this idea of masculinity that seems almost like it has been deliberately engineered to destroy a person which goes beyond the visible, physical aspects like strength and aggression and stoicism. This idea demands men be uncompromising, unforgiving, rigid and conforming. If you don't meet all these ideals you damn well better be working towards them, otherwise you are a failure at best, a traitor at worst. The only acceptable compassion is reserved for those who are serious in their efforts to conform with them. There is no acceptance of others; if you deviate you are a deviant...a sick person. This is *seriously messed up*. How so many people *don't* complely snap is actually surprising. On more than one occasion I have heard that activity on Grindr has spiked at the place and time of some big far-right event. Like...imagine being told all your life homosexuality is sinful and a disease and living in that as a gay/bi/pan man and DESPISING yourself...

@overholt generally speaking, for a number of years now, whenever I have been told "I can't find something on your website" it has been because they aren't going on the website. Typically they are putting their search terms into their browser's "everything bar" (formerly known as the address bar) and searching Google, which (increasingly as time passes) brings them to your website but not to the relevant page. But don't worry because Gemini™️ to the rescue! Instead of not taking them to the wrong page of your website it scrapes your entire website to train an LLM bot to conveniently provide an incorrect summary without them even having to go to your website in the first place! 🙃

So I have long suspected Big Tech to be "reactionary wolves in visionary sheep's clothing"...ever since Larry Ellison* declared "the network is the computer" and my assessment was basically that he was trying to bring back pre-1975 mainframe and minicomputer timeshare systems to reestablish the Old Computing Hegemony, but I didn't really talk about that much because even mildly suggesting this in the late 1990s make me sound like a paranoid crank.Anyways in 2026 you have to be completely deluded to think anything else. Big Tech has been on a decades long mission with #CloudComputing to kill personal computing and reestablish the old order of a small number of Big Tech companies having complete control of the world's IT, and the #GenAI grift is part of their efforts to ensure people remain captive users who can only afford to rent "dumb terminals" (ie. "Smart" phones and tablets) to access and use their information. This is NOT inevitable and it is NOT normal and it is NOT progress.https://www.windowscentral.com/artificial-intelligence/jeff-bezos-says-the-quiet-part-out-loud-bezos-envisions-that-youll-give-up-your-pc-for-an-ai-cloud-version

       * correction/clarification for the benefit of those not exposed to the entire conversation thread who keep correcting me :blobcheeky: https://coales.co/@msh/115906178186111753The term was coined in the 1980s by a Sun employee but resurfaced on the press during the launch marketing of the "Network Computer" initiative in the late 1990s, of which Oracle was a part before it acquired Sun outright

You know what? The techbro mindset of "the network is the computer" is really the origin of everything that has gone wrong with the internet. Placing the network at the centre was a big mistake. Huge data centres were a mistake. Big locked in platforms ruined the internet. Cloudflare sucks so bad. The Internet of Brainless Things is garbage. Putting all our data in the #cloud to be exploited, hacked and leaked has killed our faith in technology. The only way out of this mess is to recognise that we have had it upside down for all these decades. In actuality.. THE COMPUTERS ARE THE NETWORKWhere are the computers? Who owns them? What are they being used for and why?The resilience of our networks, both technically and socially, depend critically on the proper ownership, distribution and stewardship of our computers, and we continue hurtling towards oblivion!
