LRT there's so many heartbreaking stories like this in FOSS, developers putting in lots of work, companies using it to make huge profits but refusing to compensate even a bitas living costs mount i expect more FOSS devs to give up; being really enthusiastic about something helps, but there are limitsi've been lucky to get pretty much continuous funding for my work maintaining bitcoin core

@orionwl Making money from writing FOSS is an incredibly tough nut to crack. However, I think many devs can help themselves by thinking about monetisation early on, instead of just focusing on the engineering details. For example, offering ancillary services to the code (consulting, hosting, maintenance etc.), offering paid-for licenses if the code is copyleft and offering customizations for paying customers.A minuscule number of FOSS devs can live off donations. The rest have to hustle.

@orionwl I didn't but I have over a decade experience writing (mostly) FOSS code and (trying) to make money with it.I've had some success with it, but there's no guarantee of success and it can be quite precarious at times.

@orionwl I saw someone mention that GitLab has this 'Enterprise' option that makes it such that anyone who wants to use those particular repos in that section have to pay. I have not checked it in detail yet.

@orionwl The old problem. The NetBSD project I think was partially destroyed as a result of a commercialization attempt (Wasabi.) The people making money caused a significant schism with the people who didn't. It really does seem to require post-fortune backing.
