@xerz @thahajemnireal even better: year of XMPP.But I completely agree, neither of them are a good option. Signal implemented some shady crytocurrency stuff which even if it wasn't malicious, I feel it is completely unnecessary in a IM.And telegram isn't E2E and recollects far more user data.Both are centralized and required a phone number.If I really had to choose, I'd go with Signal since at least it's encrypted.

@werwolf @xerz Well, let's just say switching people over to Telegram/Signal is hard enough, but XMPP. Man, that's gonna be even harder.

@thahajemnireal @werwolf @xerz using XMPP & helping people onboard is getting easier with @snikket_imThere's still the question of which snikket server to use if you don't have the ability to run your own. That's something that I think Mastodon and Matrix did better: a decent default instance with effective encouragement to migrate to other smaller ones.WhatsApp had a good twist with the "$1/year after first year" to seed the network

@keveretsThat's the gap the Snikket hosted service aims to fill. We don't have the finances to run a giant open server - and that's not something we believe in anyway.Our goal with Snikket hosting is to have an easy "no skills required" way to get started on your own private instance which you are free to migrate/self-host at any point.
