Once again shocked and frustrated that there's no main stream option for DRM free video purchases.

@ajroach42 Wonder if it's another manifestation of microsoft's "no cracks in the wall" mentalityif one of them admitted it gives them nothing but harms consumers, the rest would be ... encouraged to not use it either

Defending DRM in my replies gets you a suspension from the instance. :psyduck:

Now there are certainly DRM free video stores. They're just... obscure. For example, the Troma store is full of DRM Free video: https://www.tromadirect.com/Which is great if you're in to absolute garbage.

@ajroach42 How would that work and not result in rampant piracy?

To be clear: 1) DRM is bad 2) We won this battle for audio and it didn't bankrupt the studios 3) I'm not interested in a devil's advocate argument, ever, under any circumstances (even now.)

@ajroach42 I was pleased to note the other day that I’ve never had to deal with amazon’s DRM because the publisher’s with works I want to buy all have DRM free options.

Streaming is also usually bad! I dislike streaming, just generally. Livestreaming is a different kind of beast that I can forgive, and something like peertube is fine because it allows downloads, and seeds over webRTC and doesn't use any DRM. But streaming generally is bad for producers, and is generally bad for consumers too.

I was looking for a commercially available DRM free video specifically to have something I didn't produce to experiment on re: Tiny Videos. It looks like I'll be using something from Troma.

@elb I was looking for some live action, black and white, derived from film sources to start with.I guess I'll probably end up using one of my own archives.

@ajroach42 I suspected you were probably not looking for this kind of video, based on your previous threads. Still, it's Creative Commons, and some of it is very fine source material. 🙂

@strypey @elb I uploaded at least a few of the videos on vidcommons. I was looking for a reasonably high quality professional transfer of a black and white film that I could pay for, and run some encoding tests on. I digitize film on a regular basis, and I know how my re-encoding techniques perform against home made film transfers and DVD rips. I wanted to learn how things compare when you're dealing with commercial film.
