#Gitea is joining the fediverse πŸŽ‰ We can now announce we've been accepted into the #NLnet funding round that we applied to. https://nlnet.nl/project/Gitea/Thank you to @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends and so many others for getting us to this point. We are very much looking forward to many wonderful things that federation within forges can support.

@realcaseyrollins I'm guessing from any instance you'll be able to access the projects from any other instanceand maybe use your account from instance A to work on a project on instance Bthat sounds like what I'd expect from a federated git

@bunni ah okay. So it wouldn't necessarily federate with #Pleroma or #Mastodon then lol

@gitea @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends Wowwww !!Incredible to see new apps joining the fediverse! :fediverse: Congratulations for the funding too! What does joining the fediverse exactly means from a user perspective ? Does Gitea is already fully federated ?Some features examples would be nice :)

@samuelroland @gitea @NGIZero @forgefriends Gitea is not federated just yet. "Joining" is to be understood as "thanks to the NLnet funding there will be concrete progress to implement federation natively in Gitea" πŸ˜‰

Looking forward to its implementation to migrate from GitHub to a Gitea instance :ablobcatheart: πŸŽ‰ .@NGIZero @dachary

@gitea @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends Cool! Looking forward for that :)Are there any thoughts about changing to a more sustainable licence like the #AGPL? With federation this gets especially important. The MIT licence makes 'embrace, extend, extinguish' extremely easy: Company X creates a proprietary Gitea fork, federates with the existing instances, makes significant improvements/offers to lure people into their product. Changing to their instance is smooth thanks to federation.

@gitea @NGIZero @dachary @forgefriends ... I assume (but don't know) that many people who invest their time into Gitea would be quite pissed with something like that happening. If that's the case, then the AGPL is the better choice.Corporations are maybe not yet after the Fediverse, but they will once it grows.Of course, the MIT is a better choice if you want to work for future corporations instead of future users :)

@werwolf @gitea @forgefriends True. Linux and other projects that have a mail workflow. But there are contexts where developers chose a differently, such as using a forge. Whatever the reasons, this is where we are now. There are two paths forward: a) convince people using forges to switch to a mail based workflow, b) federate forges. The first is what SourceHut and others do. Gitea chose the second option and implement federation. It’s not a competition, there is value in both approaches.

@vovanium @NGIZero @dachary @gitea @forgefriends I'm not talking about improvements in the federation protocol. I mean other improvements in Gitea which make it more attractive: integration with some other cloud platform, etc.But you got the point:You get the improvements if you move to the improved instance. But not the other way. You can move without much costs, you can still communicate with the other instance as you did before. But the other instances don't have the improvements.

@t0k@social.tchncs.de @NGIZero@mastodon.xyz @dachary@mastodon.online @gitea@social.gitea.io @forgefriends@mastodon.online Non-federated features? I think there's already github for this. (i more afraid it got federated, as XMPP was nearly killed similar way)Anyway, i don't see a reason to name EEE strategy 'super-easy' even with source code readily available, as it involves months to years of marketing.

@dachary @gitea @forgefriends yeah, I agree. Gitea is still far better than Github or Gitlab. But I hate being forced to use the web UI to do things.

@bob I find them far easier and straight forward than web UIs. I don't want to open a slow modern web browser just to accept a patch or read issues. But I'm glad that Gitea got this feature. It's still far better than Github. I don't have a Github account while I have an account on a Gitea server so I hope that this have good adoption. But I really prefer email based workflow.

@bunni @realcaseyrollins That's what I'd hope for. Right now I still keep projects on Gitlab, because some people contribute issues and fixes. I was thinking about self-hosting my own git-web using Gitea, Gogs, Codeberg or whatever, but 1) I've heard from a lot of people they all suck and 2) I don't want to allow registration on my self-hosted stuff. I suppose I could allow registration without repository creation, but then you're giving people another barrier just to contribute to a project.

@realcaseyrollins @bunni They could do a hybrid model. Federate contributing code/pulls/issues via their own protocol, but also have some ActivityPub accounts per project so you can get fedi notifications of pulls, ci, issues, releases .. (Like @myproject-all, @myproject-releases, @myproject-bugs, etc.)
