@amolith You really should be rebooting every time your firmware or kernel update. You probably should when your libc and init update, because figuring out whether or not a reboot is necessary is harder than just rebooting.Uptime contests are useless and harmful.

@flandrescarlet@uwu.social @amolith@nixnet.social Same here. I like saving power and starting fresh for the day. Also gets very hot here, so I'd rather not have it running outside the hrs it needs to.I'm on a laptop primarily atm, but I've always done the same with desktops too.

@amolith I don't really have a primary desktop PC. I reboot my work PC every day, my private PC isn't used by me currently, and my laptop is only running when needed. I rarely restart my server (which is the primary place I work on)

@Firalia @amolith @flandrescarlet Suspending to RAM for the night should be okay; in your bios settings or equivalent you can make suspension very power efficient.I am far from certain, so please don't make any important decisions about your power consumption without verifying first.

@amolith When you can go from shut off to an x server in under 10 seconds there isn't too much of a difference between sleep and off(And 5 of those seconds are my computer waiting for me to select a boot device before it loads grub automatically)

@Seirdy @Firalia @amolith In theory (and maybe in practice), yes, but personally I would rather cold boot for the piece of mind. The more learn about how computers can randomly break (e.g. bitflips), the more value I put into "resets" like these :notlikemiya: Just my 2 cents of paranoia. :02smile:

@flandrescarlet @Firalia @amolith That's a valid reason, esp. if you don't have ECC RAM. I was mostly addressing the power usage and temperature concerns. Temperature should be almost negligible when suspended.Oh, and then there's hibernation. I often hibernate when traveling.

@flandrescarlet@uwu.social @Seirdy@pleroma.envs.net @amolith@nixnet.social Yeah, I get enough weird things happening just from having it on during the day that lead to restarts :nkogiggle_a:It only really takes a couple minutes to get up and running for the day. Plus, Windows likes to do weird things outside active hrs if you leave it on, and I am stuck with it as my OS atm, so eh.

@Firalia @amolith @flandrescarlet Oh if I was running a complex OS like Windows or a full KDE desktop then I would probably reboot more regularly because some daemon somewhere is gonna get a runtime error or memory leak. But on my current workstation and servers I know what every single daemon is for and can easily identify issues, so I pretty much only reboot when a certain update calls for it. Or if I mess with something like kernel params or certain sysctls.

@amolith Whenever an update ran and requires a reboot - I run @opensuse Tumbleweed, btw, so that might happen daily, and Zypper is nice enough to tell you when a reboot or restarting a bunch of apps is a good idea.Sometimes in between when it's been a while and I think things are wonky. Which is rare.

Personally, I rarely turn off my laptop.I put it in suspend when not in use.Only ever seem to reboot when the OS nags me to. Usually after a large update. In my experience; Linux never really needs to be rebooted except during the first ever boot & update. After that, it’s always been smooth sailing for me.@amolith
