Can you touch type?Had a conversation on here which surprized me - someone said touch typing wasn't as prevelant as I though.I haven't worked with anyone in the last... I don't know, 30 years? who could not. (That's across 3 countries.) It was taught (and required) in schools (4 different schools systems, 2 different US states) when I was in school (pre-home computers, 10 years before the internet.)I'd like to know - of the people on the Fediverse, who can touch type?(That would, I assume, mean people who are typing things somewhat regularly.)(Please boost, 7 day poll)There will be a follow up poll about "taught in school" so I can understand a bit more.

@Truck I am able to type without looking at the keyboard at ~110 wpm but I don't type "properly" if that makes sense. I started by hunting and pecking then it kind of developed from there; I think I primarily end up using my thumb and first two fingers of each hand, my ring finger less frequently, and my right pinky for enter, home, end, and other keys way on the right side of my keyboard. It's weird but it works :flan_laugh:

@amolith That actually sounds like it may be VERY useful on some keyboards which have additional thumb keys (instead of a huge spacebar.)

@Truck I'm eventually™ going to switch over to my Ergodox and it'll force me to learn proper touch typing. It's configured with a slightly modified Dvorak layout and the key caps are blank so the learning curve is astronomical :blobfoxlaughsweat:

@Truck@icosahedron.website If you define touch-typing as typing without looking at the keyboard, yes, but I don't 10-finger home-row type.

@Truck I feel like most people can touch type too. My 8yo can touch type, and I have no idea how she learned. I think she just taught herself so she could talk to friends on the computer. I did recently run into a young woman who I saw typing just using the knuckle on her pointer finger on each hand. That was pretty eye opening.

@Truck I basically never look at the keyboard. Does that count? I was never specifically taught touch typing but figured out my own method on my own.

@Zach777 It does, and I have a third poll which asks that specifically. It seems you're in the MAJORITY here on Mastodon with that method (:

@Truck I try to touch type often, I usually end up doing hybrid hunt and pecking though. It still doesn’t feel natural to look at the screen when I type after two years of industry programming and four years of university. I was homeschooled for primary school in the US though so perhaps it would have been taught in public school.

@awildthorp Interesting - just out of curiosity, which layout do you use? US International, US "standard" (no alt-gr," dvorak, colemak, AZERTY, QWERTZ, Workman, or "one of the other billion layouts?"Wondering if that has something to do with the need to look at the keyboard. It may also just be a "comfort" thing you have, assuring that your input is correct.I'm intrigued, if you want to share more, cool, if not, thanks for the input (:

@Truck I use standard US layout. I think it’s partly a comfort thing, partly my fingers just aren’t accurate. I tend to typo a lot on a desktop.

@awildthorp I imagine there isn't much push for anything but the "standard" US layout - but it does mean you can't type naïve properly. Or, you know, Spanish (:I have opinions on whether that causes folks in the US to be a bit more "insular" accidentally. I sometimes state that opinion when talking about not living in the US anymore, and various perception issues that occur accidentally there.Anyway - thanks for your input - it's helping me understand a bit more about something I had previously formed an incorrect opinion of (that keycaps aren't needed by most people, and that buying a keyboard that has the "right" keys on the caps doesn't matter. For some it does, and it's NOT just people who can't touch type.)

@Truck it’s unfortunate that dialect marks aren’t well known how to find on the US QWERTY layout. MacOS for example makes them pretty easy to type, though you’d have to hit them on accident to find them in the first place 😔

@awildthorp I'm a big fan of the eurkey layout ( https://eurkey.steffen.bruentjen.eu/layout.html ) and have this on all my setups now. But I will have to move from it when I change to the physically split keyboards (:I am NOT a big fan of the UK layout (totally wrong location for @, ", and probably some other keys.) I can actually type fairly well on a QWERTZ layout in comparison, though the off-by-one errors the ( and ) cause throw me for a loop - I'll adjust my hand automatically thinking that it has accidentally moved to the left, and then suddenly U ab ttoubg akk wribgm abd get wgat us gibg ib ig off by one error again ok move hand back and edit everything...AZERTY, though... for AGES I could not find the M. Then a friend from Belgium pointed out it's very logically located next to the l. And now I wonder why WE don't have that. But I still don't reach for it in that location (:

@amolith @Truck Speaking from experience, just wait until you get comfortable enough to daily drive an Ergodox, then use a laptop keyboard again for two minutes. You get over it, eventually, but, yeah.It does some major psychic damage to reset back to zero a skill you've had so long that you take it entirely for granted.
