@sneak Make the switch to the Matrix network...it's actually opensource, openstandard, federated, and de-centralized...run your own server, it's incredibly easy and has all of the benefits of Signal without the corporation in the middle.https://matrix.org/@amiko:matrix.13bells.com

@amiko @sneak While this sounds like a great idea, my experience is that Matrix is just not *there* yet. It's tight security is so secure as to make it basically unusable for me.

@punkscience @sneak Curious what you're referring to WRT security so tight that it's unusable. I've been running my own server for a while now, and I've convinced most of my decidedly non-technical family to use it. My 78 year old mom uses it daily, and she's one that finds email a complex chore to use.I've introduced 20-30 people to Matrix, but this is the first user-experience complaint I've heard...you can create an account and be up and chatting in minutes without any complex configuration

@amiko @sneak So as I write this "Element" on my Android device can't access any previous chats with my friends because I had to change my password. It game me the option to authorize them using sessions on other devices but I presently don't have sessions on other devices. I did at one point but I gave up on them for exactly the same reason. Just today I tried to install Seaglass on my MacBook and it won't login due to a password error despite the fact that the same password worked fine on Element... I cannot explain this. I could go on... but yeah... not ready for primetime.

@punkscience @amiko on the most popular phone in the world, it also has to route all notifications through the developer's servers or you don't get notifications on mobile. this defeats the point of federated systems and you might as well just use signal (which doesn't break in these simple ways)

@farbod @amiko matrix is trash, and has been trash for years, and appears to continue to remain trash for the foreseeable future, therefore not only are you wrong, i am now tempted to ignore your opinions about technology in the future.

@amiko you don't know how notifications work on iOS, do you?

@sneak Sorry, I don't. That said, I have many users on my Matrix server who use the Element client for Matrix on iOS. Never heard any complaints or issues with it there. I know notifications do work. One of the more gratifying features has been not having to really "teach" it to anyone. Android, Windows, iOS, or simple web based, it all just seems to work out of the box without a lot of fanfare or difficulty.Anyone who got a bad impression, might want to give it another look.

@sneak Sorry you've had a negative experience, then felt the need to denigrate others over it, but based on my sample set, that makes you quite the outlier. But if it makes you feel better about it, you might want to ignore me for the foreseeable, as we seem to be working on different levels.Be nicer to people who offer to help, it'll do you better in the long run. You could have simply, said, no thanks, that's not for me and moved on.@farbod

@sneak @amiko but I just setup my matrix instance tokhmi.xyz and I’m loving it the bridges are the key points for me. What do you mean by trash I know it’s not the best messaging platform out there but it’s getting better and better by the time.

@amiko the only way that push notifications work for clients using element on ios is by going to the vector.im centralized server *first*. all push notifications in apple land have to come from the app developer. for element, that's the centralized matrix developers.at that point you might as well use instagram DMs; it has more people on it.

@sneak @amiko that's terrible. so it's going through a service you don't want it to even if you have your own matrix server if you use it on iOS? does jailbreaking it solve it? I apologize, I've never used an iPhone I only use android.

@lichelordgodfrey @amiko no, this is how all push notifications work on ios and the mac. the device maintains a connection to apple. it's the firebase/fcm equivalent on iOS. (google does the same thing mostly)
