I kinda wanna make posts on facebook again just to complain about it. I have been using it lately to get all the data I can about my contacts to add it to my carddav contacts server thingyIts quite interesting to see that a lot of my 'friends' there don't share email or phone publicly, not even to added friends, which I guess is nice privacy-wise tho.Anyways Im gonna keep digging aroundhttps://theoatmeal.com/comics/reaching_people

@joeligj12 Extracted all contacts' birthdays before I got banned. I continue to hbd contacts that I can still reach, but for others, if there is so little connection in between to the point that Facebook was the only link, then I cut it. No regrets, but still sucks to do that during covid isolation, so hoping to get some new friends when this is over.

@ssafar I actually have some issues like you. Since I am getting all the info I can about my contacts/friends, I find it quite interesting that most of them have not updated their feed since 2018 or so, and their profile pics are also outdated. So yeah, at least quite a few of my old friends don't use it often, which sadly also makes them harder to contact lol. I just wish everyone had at least their own site or something

@joeligj12 yep! it feels weird to think "I wish they used facebook more", but... still.this seems to be an underappreciated downside of facebook's existence: people start thinking that "posting stuff on the internet == facebook", rightfully conclude that facebook is not that great, and then stop posting stuff / updating info altogether

@ssafar @joeligj12 actually honestly if I meet people that think like me this might be an interesting way to get them into FOSS. Just help them code up a simple website and push it out. Then maybe they will get sucked down this rabbit hole like I have :)

@pyre35 @joeligj12 as someone who does handwritten HTML rsynced onto a VPS, after spending quite a bit of time reading a 1000-page CSS book... I think I might also be part of that "doesn't know how easy it is" group :D how would you get someone started who is really drastically new to this? (... this is not an argument against; I'm actually curious)

@pyre35 @joeligj12 it'd be fairly cool if we could make things more social-network-y by default, tooe.g. a super-simple way to create an RSS feed from your HTML pages that doesn't involve actual coding or hosting various thingsor indieweb-style cross-site links, without the mandatory rabbit hole of reading through all the standards ever(optional rabbit holes are good though :))

@ssafar @joeligj12 I read the guide from @kev on setting up a jekyll site and was up in a matter of days. Haven't changed much style-wise since. I've just focused on writing. Honestly though, coding my film reviews site, even though it looks way worse, was probably even easier. It's just a bunch of php files that I then use a build script to convert to html before I push it to netlify.

@ssafar @joeligj12 this has me curious though... do we have like a stock html/css someone can download, change some things, and be up and running? @kev might have the simplest way with his guide but would this be even easier? a fosstodon getting started website package if you will?
