@NeonPurpleStarI haven't tried it. @stux runs a #Misskey instance, if you want to try it. It *looks* very similar to Mastodon. This is the link:https://misskey.ai/

@towo @NeonPurpleStar 500 character limit doesn't apply to Pleroma. If you're using Mastodon, do yourself a favour and stop. Use Pleroma (or Misskey, I don't really know much about that but it seems to be a less serious Pleroma). Mastodon is developed by an Apple fanboy dictator who tells you what you can and cannot do. Seriously, get off Mastodon.

@inference@pleroma.inferencium.net @NeonPurpleStar@mastodon.lol Pleroma development has become really slow. Been an admin of Pleroma instances for 3 years or so. Misskey currently feels a lot more alive.

@towo @NeonPurpleStar Misskey seems to have a lot of unnessecary features, and I don't need or want the "cutesy" feel it has. I'm not against it, but it seems to be doing stuff just because it can.Pleroma doesn't need to continuously add features, because it has everything someone would need for a social media experience, and it's straight to the point. Pleroma is likely a lot more security hardened than Misskey. I run a Pleroma instance and apply extensive security and privacy hardening to it; I wouldn't do that to Misskey unless someone would cut down the useless code it uses.

@NeonPurpleStar @towo Where should I start?1. He doesn't care about anything but making Mastodon an Apple style service/app, even going as far as to base the entire UI and design on Apple.2. He mandates a list of instances to block, which must be (or is highly encouraged to be) followed by Mastodon app and instance developers. For example, Tusky for Android has a hard-coded block list of Mastdon instances in the source code.3. He is against free speech and doesn't mind banning accounts on his instance for very minor offences and opinions.4. He supports the dictatorship post scanning and "fact checking" bullshit which is taking over centralised big tech social media services.

@inference@pleroma.inferencium.net @NeonPurpleStar@mastodon.lol ActivityPub, in it's nature, is not secure nor private ^^Regarding the bloat argument. I have come to enjoy custom emoji reactions, and I would miss them, if I had to switch back. But maybe not everyone's cup of tea.

@towo @NeonPurpleStar ActivityPub is simply a decentralised social media and P2P protocol; it has no effect on security. The instances and software based on ActivityPub are what determine the security and privacy. It's the same as any other decentralised service. As a cybersecurity researcher, I take security and privacy very seriously, which is why I'm running the only apparent hardened Pleroma (or Fediverse) instance. Check my profile for handening I've already done to it.

@inference @towo Inference I have a pleroma account with which I have tried to follow you. So I have a way out should things get bad.On ethics of software and free speech, I don’t have a problem with mastodon. On my alt, I occasionally talk with Pete and some others from FSE. It is fun, but sometimes I wanna be protected from those instances and the blocklist then benefits me.I may not agree with Eugen on some issues, but I am with mastodon for now.

@NeonPurpleStar @towo I don't think it's about whether you agree with the blocklist they have in place, because you could always block instances yourself. Remember that this is NOT the instance blocklist, which is fine, because that's the point of control of decentralised instances with different rules etc; this is the point of EVERY Mastodon instance being FORCED to obey the same blocklists, effectively making Mastodon semi-centralised.I don't have a follow request. Federation is semi-broken for me right now, and I'm not the only one with this issue. Try to follow one of my secondary accounts (alts):- https://fedi.absturztau.be/inference (Pleroma)- https://gameliberty.club/@inference (Mastodon, so use as a last resort)

@inferenceLook, I fully understand your mentality and respect it. But I would guess it is not everyone’s cup of tea. Those who do want to go past the fedi block will do so, and they have options for it. For the better or the worse, Eugen is the lead dev, and he gets to decide what he does with his creation, just as you can choose to use something that provides more freedom.

@NeonPurpleStar Which is exactly what I stated. I said move away from Mastodon because there are choices. I didn't say stop developing Mastodon or even take it down. There are plenty of corrupt developers, in both closed and open source, and they have a right to continue, but I will never support or recommend them.

@inference I am sorry if this is an opinion that annoys you, but some things are not just a binary 0 or 1 scale.A few things do bug me overall in the decision making from Eugen, but I am far from wanting to delete this account. Overall I would say I am kinda satisfied with it.Also this instance has so far worked 100% bug free, which I do treasure.

@NeonPurpleStar Opinions don't annoy me, because they don't affect me. Everyone has a right to an opinion, and they should fight for that right. I'd fight for your opinion, even if I disagree with it more than anyone else's.What can, and do, annoy me are facts. If something is to truly be open source, free, and decentralised, it must be sovereign, and Mastodon is just not that; not when these mandated blocklists are in place. One of the entire reasons for escaping big tech is the immense power they hold over everyone, effectively negating legal democracy, with their "fact checking" of course being far superior to everyone else's. Mastodon is doing the same thing by supporting this and even promoting it (I made a post about this a while ago). While Mastodon isn't terrible to use, and it may work great for you, the ethics of it just don't stand up for human right and freedom.

@inference You are right on the principles. Here is the thing though. Invasion of privacy from google and fb had many stages. For some time, I was ok with the data collection.I decided to delete everything when I saw a lecture from Prof. Zuboff about the emotion contagion experiment they did, as well as Myanmar and Christopher Wiley. It took many violations. Eugen has some wrongdoings in his history, which I don’t consider a dealbreaker for the time being.

@NeonPurpleStar All I had to do to realise what big tech social media was doing (with supporting evidence from past events and other research) was watch The Social Dilemma. The thing is, I'm not completely against Facebook or Google etc (I actually use Google as a search engine in my least secure web browser profile, with DuckDuckGo being in the rest.), because everyone has a different threat model, wants, and needs. Privacy should be selective and take a top down approach (maximum privacy by default, and removing privacy as wanted or needed, and requiring manual intervention for that to happen, just like giving away personal information to people in person.). Facebook (and other companies) have violated this even when they state their privacy invasion within their privacy policies (Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal is just one example.).Even using decentralised networks such as Pleroma or Mastodon do not mean the problem goes away, you're just passing trust to someone else. Even TLS (used in HTTPS, among other protocols) is only a guarantee of authenticity and partial security, not privacy. There will ALWAYS be an anchor/root of trust. All you can do is find evidence and act upon it. There is evidence of Mastodon breaking the freedoms of the users, which is why I recommend against using it. There is no such evidence against Pleroma or Misskey which I know of, which is why I do recommend them.In no post of mine do I ever tell people what to do or not to do, I simple advise and hand out evidence and facts. Most of my statements are not opinions, because my opinions really don't matter. My profession is curating threat models and performing assessments on people and their systems, then giving solid advice. Doing anything else would make me a dictator, even if I told people not to use closed source or not to live in North Korea (even if we all know it would be for the benefit of the client).

@inference But I am taking your presentation of facts into consideration. I assure you I do, and in fact I give you much more credit because you know your shit. For me it is a matter of convenience. I am comfortable right now in this instance and I am not keen on giving it up.Should worse things happen with mastodon, I will, but I am not there yet.

@NeonPurpleStar Then, that, like many other people in my past, is your choice, and I respect that. It is not stupidity if you know what you're getting yourself into, it is stupidity if you don't care. You seem to care, and have made this decision by yourself, using my (and possibly other) evidence as a foundation. That is how it should be done; you should never rely on what someone else tells you to do. I'd rather be wrong from my own decision than right from someone else's.No one should take anything even I say as fact unless it is provable, which is why I greatly respect people such as yourself who have decided that, despite the facts I gave, platforms/services/apps etc are suitable for them; in this case, Mastodon.Whether you use Mastodon or not affects me in no way, so I have no reason to push you to switch. I've given what I can, and will be happy to assist further, but, for this scenario, my job is done.
