It is nice that if you ever need to very quickly roughly define a kilogram you can just get a liter of really cold water and it'll be pretty closeAnd if you need to define a liter you can just use three metersticks and mark off 10cm in each directionYou do need a meterstick though and it's kind of hard to make one from scratch (laser and very precise clock is possible but not for an ordinary person)

But like if you have a 1kg weight you can work out how much cold water that is, find the edge length of that cube, and multiply by ten and now you've got a meter

@changeling@disqordia.space yes but as stated, actually doing this requires tools and techniques that are not readily available to an ordinary person, and especially not in an environment where you might need to rapidly rederive your measurement system

@abloo@fedi.absturztau.be @changeling@disqordia.space but if we're deriving units roughly we probably don't have a very good vacuum pump

@alexandra @abloo 🦋 how much would Earth's atmosphere really slow it down at the distance of just one meter? probably no more than the variance of the water's volume from not being precisely 0

@changeling@disqordia.space @abloo@fedi.absturztau.be exactly; rough derivations are rough, they're gonna be a bit off but that's OK

@alexandra @abloo 🦋 presumably we are in some kind of survival scenario not trying to do an orbital maneuver
