Every time I see people reading Linux guides that tell them to unnecessarily mess around with stuff managed by the package manager I just can't help but cringe. The saddest thing is, that's what most Linux "guides" are.

Like, they tell people to put custom fonts into /usr/share/fonts, or install applications manually to /usr/lib, while you can totally do that just in your user home directory instead, which is much easier and does not even need root.

Or they tell people to install a DKMS module manually when there are packages available from the package manager. This is just asking for trouble once the kernel API is changed.

@PeterCxy i mean, many articles are stating to pipe downloaded script via wget and execute it right away to bootstrap something. Yuck.

Some don't even tell people to use DKMS and instead just compile the module manually.

@b847c1960 And 90% of those scripts (when they are not malicious -- which is the biggest concern here) just download a bunch of junk, then compile them and put them in /usr, without considering what happens if ABI is broken during an upgrade or whatever.

@PeterCxy true story. On the other side, i wonder how much money are those people earning from the ads displayed on those websites. I definitely see much better trend in which individuals are writing goog quality content but then again i see a lot of portals where news can be a bit... Just for the ads?Not generalizing here but i am glad that i am not the only one thinking that those articles are not really helping.
