This is just a little overview of SepiaSearch but I'm dissapointed you didn't go into more of how it works, regarding how vidoes are presented (the order for example). In this example, your videos are the first, I doubt that's really exactly what somebody would want to be honest. The last result is the actual channel that would be most interesting to most probably. The search just lists instances on Framasoft's PeerTube index (https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances). Peertube.social for example isn't on that instance because of faillures to moderate that instance against copyright infringement and most importantly hate-filled instances. All moderation is done after adding the instances to the index. That's a big problem really as most YT alternatives are cesspools of right-wing hate hurting their chances to actively appeal to a broader audience and PeerTube should not become that. Let those instances have their own index, with their own search website. To be clear, having reported recently some instances it seems that some of them have been taken off. That is encouraging and Peertube·Social is considering joining the index soon(ish).

@niquarl@peertube.social I didn't want to get into the technical details too much, because these things can change pretty fast with new technology. The purpose was really just to let people know it exists. I expect I'll be doing follow up videos on the specifics as time goes by. Sorry you were disappointed.

@chriswere@share.tube I understand that it would change and perhaps a simple announcement like is all that's needed in these early days. I would suspect though that most, if not all, know about SepiaSearch if they are on watching this video on PeerTube.Looking forward to those videos. Also, have you seen TubeLab from Fedilab's dev ? It's pretty cool and might interest you do to a video on it one day.

Interesting search! Your website inspires me to have my own site similar to yours. But I'll probably have mine be more modern looking :D

Don't forget to try https://peertube-search.com in my opinion it has superior results and more advanced filtering possibilities (latest, most views, language etc). It even allows you to view the videos on the site if you wish, allowing a more YouTube centralized experience. If they only had accounts to allow users to create, follow, and subscribe it would be perfect.

@lps do you know how they are building their search index? Because I think it could be interesting to incorporate this in a local search.

@chriswere It would be interesting if something like #SepiaSearch was made for #ActivityPub in general and not just #PeerTube

@viktorstrate @chriswere I totally agree to the principal that we need a general "#Fedisearch", although #SepiaSearch itself still appears to be mindbogglingly bad. Often I'll search for a keyword and the top videos won't even have it anywhere in the title, description or even channel/user name, while others that do are buried 3 pages deep. Not sure what kind of algo produces those results...I wonder... Could #Yacy somehow be extended to traverse just the #fediverse from link to link?

@viktorstrate @chriswere Hi, Today I found your post when looking for #fedisearch and #SepiaSearch tagsI created a fediverse search app: https://fedisearch.skorpil.czIt collects feeds from #Mastodon, #PeerTube, #Misskey and partly, #PleromaNew ideas are welcomed. I still have several improvements in todo list (like better search query specification, instance searching...)
