What should be the next operating system I try on my 2006 Dell D620?I'm downloading the 32-bit edition of Debian almost by muscle memory, but I'm thinking about trying other OSes. And the fact it's 32-bit sort of limits it a little bit. Maybe FreeBSD?

@kzimmermann After one of the BSD (free, net, open, dragonfly) try Slackware, (and compile a kernel with exact what the D620 needs and strip out everything else.)

@rudolf @LinuxLounge @kzimmermann What about AntiX/MX Linux? Can be made to work on a similar way that the Puppies do (everyting on RAM, choose to save at shutdown) without the need to run almost everyting as root.

@LinuxLounge works extremely well, actually! Couple that with persistence and you can build an itinerant OS that can "land" on onther computers too. But I have a hard time updating things in it, and running a system like that as a daily driver makes me a little nervous. Alpine maybe?

@isobel I like that idea, dropping the things down to the barebones! I didn't know that Slackware also had this BSD-like modularity to compile your own kernels.

An alternative question could be: what is a modern and fully-featured LiveCD distro today that truly lives up to the "CD" bit of the word? In other words: fits in a sub-GB storage medium? My go-to answer for this is #PuppyLinux. But I'd love to hear more!

@kzimmermann Technically you can do that with any Linux, but back in the 90's when I started using Slackware it was necessary. I'm looking forward to seeing redox-os.org join BSD and Linux to add to the diversity, (which provides resiliency.)
