like i heard someone saying that a lot of the islamic and middle eastern imagery and language was because he was like "they're a huge part of the history of humanity, they should show up in future history too" and things, idk if that carried through, seems like mostly what people make of it is "wow cool foreigners"

but yeah apparently his motivation in making this miserable future saga was to show how miserable everyone is under totalitarian dehumanizing control and endless war? and that he wanted people to love each other. i'm happy he wanted that

@shoofle This reminds me to finally finish the first three books, because I've heard the whole point of the story comes later. Like the first book is meant as a fake-out white savior story that is refuted by everything that follows. Even with Herbert's good intentions, there's definitely a lot of stuff that sits uncomfortable.

i need to learn to explain the "no anti-war war story" thing better.the idea is that it's impossible to make a war story thats anti-war because conflict is so inherently interesting and gripping that any story you tell around war is going to deify it to some extent

i think there's probably ways around it but the basic rule, that if you're depicting war people will find it interesting and it's very hard to break away from "war is bad (but if it were justified it would be so cool!!!)" is important and good

https://www.newspapers.com/clip/25124667/it-is-impossible-to-make-an-anti-war/ here's a clipping featuring the original quote, which sadly does not elaborate or justify itself AT ALL. just "every film about war ends up being pro-war" from francoise truffauthttps://www.newspapers.com/clip/25124667/it-is-impossible-to-make-an-anti-war/

whole discussion also makes me think about why mel brooks' movies are maybe more successful than others as parodies of conservative beliefs. like when people do an anti-nazi movie that shows how dangerous and powerful the nazis are, then nazi audiences are going to watch and be like "yeah! we're dangerous and powerful!" but i think it's basically impossible to come out of blazing saddles thinking "yeah! the klansmen were so cool in this!"someone had an essay that got me thinking about this, how the full-spectrum mockery in them makes them hard to mistake
