Thinking today about an old friend of mine who believed in reading both sides to get a full picture of the argument so much she was willing to read Mein Kampf, but refused to engage with JKR's article because "it has conservative dogwhistles."

@emilialillienne Your old friend needs to evaluate her priorities better. Maybe she refuses to look at Rowling's article because Rowling has legitimate arguments while Mein Kampf is a load of rubbish.

@Starlit_Fire @emilialillienne Millions of people killed (including, ironically, gay and transexual people because they were gay and transexual) but it’s still worth checking out the other side of the argument.A woman points out that male bodies remain male and will be triggering to female victims of male sexual violence, so women need their own spaces… unforgivable, apparently. Your friend is a morally bankrupt idiot, I’m afraid.

@emilialillienne "An old friend of mine who believed in reading both sides to get a full picture of the argument so much she was willing to read Mein Kampf, but refused to engage with JKR's article because "it has conservative dogwhistles.""So your friend thought maybe Hitler had a fair point, but JKR is beyond the pale??!!! Seriously!

@EmmyNoether @Starlit_FireYeah, it has changed how I see her. I can respect someone who genuinely, across the board, wants to hear both sides of everything. I do think certain stances (Hitler's being a very obvious one) don't actually deserve it, but I also see how "don't listen to this side because they don't deserve to be heard" can be too broadly applied (as all of us know all too well) and do everyone involved a disservice. So if someone felt on general principle that they wanted to hear out every side... fine. But if you're picking and choosing which sides cross the line too much for you, there is literally no justification for being ok with reading Hitler's bs and not JKR's essay.I don't understand why otherwise very intelligent women (I understand why the men do it) seem to lose all their critical thinking when it comes to alleged ~transphobia.~ It's made me wonder many times if there's something I'm missing, if I really am the one in the wrong, just because of the cultural pressure and gaslighting (like when they say we believe things we don't, tell us we're "causing the murders of thousands of trans women across the world" and whatever, etc.). I've researched the TRA perspective extensively, even beyond back when I used to be on their side, trying to see if I am actually wrong. But I always end up coming to the same conclusion.

@emilialillienne @EmmyNoether @Starlit_Fire On a few occasions I’ve asked people what exactly JKR said that was so bad when they mention that she has said all these awful things and they can never really say. Either they didn’t read and just assumed no smoke without fire, or they did read it and couldn’t find any really awful quotes or points to pick out so just pretend she secretly meant something different to what she said. Sometimes I wonder if they are scared to read it because deep down they suspect they might agree and then what would they do?

@emilialillienne I don’t know that Mein Kampf would be the thing to read to understand what happened. It was considered unreadable at the time and was a best seller because it was required to have it on the shelves and was given to couple when they married, but nobody read it.Saying “I would read Mein Kampf” is looking a it as a historic curiosity, and removing themselves from the horror of the thing because we know how it all comes out.Reading something about why the propaganda was effective would be more to the point, but that might put dents into her current belief system.
