@AthenasWrench2 this is the kind of thing that ultimately peaked me. People might think it is possible to be some kind of moderate, retaining some belief that sex is real and meaningful, but still caring about trans people. But no, it's absolutely all or nothing. Unless you are willing to deny your own experiences and what is evidently true, you're a TERF, so you might as well just embrace it

@FloozyDarlington the other day I saw an article about the AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clot risks. It was of interest to me because I've had that one. Unfortunately they chose to put it that their is no elevated risk to 'people who have periods or who have been through the menopause'. It left me confused as to whether I was at elevated risk or not as I don't have periods due to taking the pill. Were they just trying to avoid saying women or is the risk to those of us on the pill still unknown? To me it illustrated one of the many problems with this kind of language. I suppose it is better than 'bleeders' at least!

@Taralafyaa @FloozyDarlington this is it, I feel able to make a decision about what level of risk I am willing to tolerate but it's necessary to have clear information in order to do this

@feerique Even if if was remotely true, it's ridiculous that they are using the cramps as the defining feature of a period rather than the bleeding. If an actual woman experienced this, she would likely see it as the opposite, a missed period.

@cubensis A lot of the presumably very 'online' sort of people who get recruited to run social media accounts seem to think and behave like this. They really don't reflect well on the organisations they represent. Or I hope that's it. It's depressing to think formerly sensible credible organisations would think in such a way and communicate in such a childish manner

@Ari Good point. Women are so often treated as unreliable witnesses to our own experiences. In every other context people seem to defer to 'lived experience' but we are told our perceptions of our bodies and our lives are at best mistaken and at worst malicious lies.

@fpcgggc @KamalaHarrisHotComb I absolutely loved that book. Apart from being a great story, for me it explored some feminist themes in a really interesting way, for example the discussion about 'sex work' and the exploration of the way women are constantly expected to manage men's feelings, behaviours and their consequences. Rowling/Galbraith's best yet, IMO

@fpcgggc @KamalaHarrisHotComb Yes, funny how the alleged transphobia that it was supposed to be packed with was really nowhere to be seen, they were really reaching. Yet if any of these critics had paid proper attention they would notice JKR clearly signals her views on sex, gender and issues affecting women at many and various points

@emilialillienne This is one of the difficulties, it can feel as if we have to be absolutely beyond reproach at all times. The slightest whiff of misinformation or connection to right leaning sources and that will be used as evidence that we are all deluded or alt right or whatever else.Ultimately though the people who want to damn you for sharing these things will do so anyway so there's probably no point trying to appease them too much, you can't win.I think it's also worth remembering that while we all have our own limits of what we will and won't endorse or overlook, no one can honestly claim that every single piece of journalism, literature or art they engage with is entirely produced by people who share their own values in every way. So anyone demanding this of you is probably being hypocritical

@MandyJane @LostInCalifornia @BitterFleabane @sansa I think it's really annoying that they are trying to divert this to being about Adiche's 'transphobia'. I don't know where they have been but she's been open about her views on gender for years. My interpretation of the essay was that it was mainly about these people who denounce her when it advantages them to do so, while simultaneously profiting from her name and association. The trans thing was mainly just a bit of context to that. But making this all about comments made four years ago is probably a convenient way to distract from the very poor behaviour on their part described in the piece.

About a decade ago I used to go to gay/lesbian bars in my city quite a lot. This was before toilets were being labelled 'gender neutral', but they essentially operated as mixed sex because there was this norm that anyone could use any toilet. Unfortunately, a man once barged into the cubicle after me and assaulted me with his fingers. But if I ever express any disagreement with mixed sex toilets I have sometimes been told it is ME who must be planning on barging into cubicles after people because I must be obsessed with what genitals people have right? I find that extremely galling given what happened. Just wanted to mention that in light of recent events and conversations

@tangleofsnakes I sometimes wonder if sex based rights might also be described as sex based protections. They don't understand (or pretend not to understand) that it isn't about women and girls jealously keeping things for ourselves, it's about recognising that oppression and discrimination is sex based, so measures against it must be too.In one breath they are talking about abortion and about women in parts of the world that may experience greater oppression...then in another they are implying sex is irrelevant. Makes no sense

I was at an outdoor party yesterday and I met this interesting woman, at one point she began telling me how people called her a TERF because of her views on trans issues. It was such an energising moment to meet someone like this offline and be able to talk about it, especially since I sometimes fear that so many people in my social circles either don't support sex based rights and protections or wouldn't openly express it at least

@tangleofsnakes It's interesting to me that Pink News haven't done a piece on this latest tweet as they usually fire off about 20 hateful articles every time JK Rowling breathes. Perhaps they realise drawing attention to it will only peak more people

@HebrideanHecate @Funsizescot1975 @Ladyfat well said. Fair enough trying to put some restrictions on visits at the height of the pandemic but it's getting ridiculous, this massive reluctance to see patients. And it is inevitably having the greatest impact on those who are already most vulnerable- people with conditions such as dementia, learning disabilities, mental ill health, or simply don't speak English very fluently. Such people are going to struggle to negotiate this telephone triage system. Poorer healthcare for all and increased health inequalities. Because god forbid a doctor should have to see a patient

@HebrideanHecate I thought I was beyond the point of being surprised by any of this any more but I really am shocked at how callous this is. And that people who should be on the side of victims just allow it. You would think these people would be well trained in spotting this kind of behaviour that effects to erode and transgress the boundaries of vulnerable women, but they apparent have a big blindspot

@Spookyszn @sunspot I've seen this view a number of times, it seems fairly prevalent on reddit. That if you choose to have children you are obliged to support them financially, practically and in all ways for as long as you live, since they didn't consent to being born. And any parent failing to do this will probably be labelled as abusive or narcissistic. It's really strange

@FemaleIsNotAFeeling I was listening to the Nolan podcast and someone suggested that really we just need to get over not being able to be described by words such as mother and we will just have to learn to tolerate any discomfort or frustration around this for the greater good.WHY does this never work both ways? Why can't it be that the people who wish to stop references to women or mothers or lesbians in their proper sense learn a little tolerance, of others or of their own discomfort?

@emilialillienne @EmmyNoether @Starlit_Fire On a few occasions I’ve asked people what exactly JKR said that was so bad when they mention that she has said all these awful things and they can never really say. Either they didn’t read and just assumed no smoke without fire, or they did read it and couldn’t find any really awful quotes or points to pick out so just pretend she secretly meant something different to what she said. Sometimes I wonder if they are scared to read it because deep down they suspect they might agree and then what would they do?
