@boilingsteam Disagree. Just look at the Japanese box office, and which films hit #1 for many weeks out of the year.You can classify certain genres as being sub-culture, but on a whole it's certainly mainstream. For other examples, look at the advertising for canned coffees, pachinko, etc.

@Ben Wrong take. Revenues is not a proper metric since you have a significant amount of otaku whales in Japan that spend a lot on media and goods. Mainstream is when it touches almost everyone. Most animes are very far from mainstream, apart from kids' ones.

@boilingsteamThe majority of the movie going public are not otaku, but couples and families. It's not at all the same as things like CD sales for idol groups, which do fit the "whale" description.What about pachinko parlor advertising, and canned coffee tie ins? Canned coffee tie ins are generally all character based.

@boilingsteam Of course, like any medium there are many genres. But the medium itself is certainly mainstream. Take pachinko parlors as another example. The vast majority of those machines are anime based. You can even see anime branding on things like vegetables and produce in the supermarket.
