I think #Debian stable, especially with no weird outside repos, is very stable and an easy upgrade. Yet I always find myself reluctant to upgrade my work laptop... I don't want to do it on personal time, but I don't want to risk breaking it or even be unavailable for an extended period of time.

@CarlCravens arent you contractually obligated to install updates/keep your machine up-to-date? I found out we’re obligated to do so, and we should take the time to do this during work hours.

@kamme @CarlCravens Debian has LTS support for an incredibly long time though. So, I wouldn’t think you’d be required to upgrade.

@mwt @kamme Oh, yeah, no real pressure except peers saying they're on Deb 11. Deb 10 LTS doesn't end until June of 2024, so I've got some time. But I do like to get newer versions of apps, be in sync with my desktop (which is still Deb10) etc. Just my work laptop is always the one I balk at the most.

@kamme Oh, we're required to keep up on security patches, but because Debian LTS gives quite a long bit of coverage.I patch my machine daily, I'm just talking about a major release... v10 -> v11.

@CarlCravens yeah, my main machine has already been through one dist-upgrade and there are a few rough edges here or there, so i'm waiting for a weekend with enough uncommitted time to do a full re-install. it's always fine in the end, but there will surely be yaks to shave along the way...

@CarlCravens It's extremely uncommon to break important components on an upgrade between #Debian stable releases, but if you cannot afford any downtime you maybe could use a new, dedicated, partition. Also many companies can provide a new laptop and get back the old one after the switch.

@federico3 Stability is why I have been using Debian since 1.3 (Bo), which would be 24 years. My job has been exclusively Debian Linux administration/engineering for the last 15. (Until I started managing a team of Debian admins last year.)Downtime is less an issue of breaking things, as there's always stuff that decides to work differently and needs configs changed. Less so on a laptop than server, of course.

@CarlCravens @kamme I definitely get that. I stopped using Debian on my personal computers for this reason.I use it on my servers though because I don't need anything bleeding edge there.

@mwt @kamme I really like using the same OS on my laptop as we use on production servers, and I don't need the _latest_ versions of things, I just like to keep somewhere in the last 5 years. 😆 Though I'd like to know why xscreensaver is still such an old version even in Debian 10.For Firefox and Thunderbird, I install those from tarball and they keep themselves up to date. Slack and Discord have their own Deb repos and stay up to date that way. Most everything else is just Debian.
