I always knew Bitcoin would change (and not necessarily for the better) as it mainstreamed. What I've been most disappointed by though is how a number of pre 2017 wizards at least in public seem to be more and more withdrawn. I didn't envisage that happening and it makes Bitcoin a much less interesting place than it used to be. For someone like me who tries to contribute with no financial support it does make me question whether it is still worth it for me personally.

@michaelfolkson I've seen similar, to some extent at least. I think that at least part of the reason is that newer entrants are more layman in nature, and so the more pointedly smart contributors are being drowned out by a new cohort of sorta dumbed-down and less first-principles-driven proponents, as they're more relatable for the now more mainstream audience. It does make me sad though, I think the biggest threat to bitcoin now is it being coopted into legacy regulation, for example it...

It probably still is (for now) but on this trajectory it is going to be harder to justify and harder to stay involved without an org or company affiliation.

@michaelfolkson continuously boggles my mind to see bitcoiners cheering about new ETFs coming to play, locking a ton of coins into regulated custodial accounts. This sort of approach misses a huge chunk of the opporunity bitcoin provides imo, but its perhaps hard to communicate that to new users that just see 'store of value; ngu' as the game. I think its still important for those that see the potential to make their voice heard. The other option isn't great at all.

@htimsxela@michaelfolksonI'll try to be optimistic here, and argue that the post covid world is going to push a lot of people into hardcore anarchism, and that we can expect some of them to get interested and involved in Bitcoin with a mindset that is let's say closer to its roots. So maybe we'll be surprised by the new entrants in the months and years to come.
