Just rebuilt my #PinePhone with the KDE #Plasma #Manjaro image instead of the #Phosh version. Of course, the first thing I did after that was install #Mycroft. Honestly, it works really slick. Even the GUI works for the most part. My biggest complaint is the speed. I might as well put the order in for the #PinePhonePro right now.

@mike Lack of speed is probably due to incomplete optimization of software. I advise you to stick to original PinePhone for now.

@mike I also loved making this change (not that phosh is bad!).What kinds of tasks are good to have on the phone when using Mycroft?

@person That very well could be true, but having the faster hardware won't hurt even after the optimizations are improved.

@mcol Speaking for myself, I hate virtually all tasks that require me to type on a phone. Plus, quick tasks like just asking for the weather. Add to that automation tasks like dealing with lights and appliances are all possible from virtually anywhere if you configure the device correctly. All of that while keeping your privacy intact.

@mike "Speaking for myself, I hate virtually all tasks that require me to type on a phone" I don't think you'll have any arguments for saying that!So this automation stuff all works just fine on pinephone? This sounds incredible... definitely need to look into mycroft.

@mcol Well, Mycroft isn't "designed" to work in a mobile environment, it just happens that the Plasma Mobile running on Manjaro is basically the same as a desktop version as far as Mycroft is concerned. Anything you can do on a computer or an appliance with Mycroft you can do on a PinePhone. Mycroft works with Home Assistant to allow for voice control of virtually anything Home Assistant works with. Top that off with the whole stack being open source and it's hard to go wrong.

@mcol The biggest caveat I can see right now is that things aren't super speedy on the standard #PinePhone. Thankfully @PINE64 has recently given us the solution to that problem with the #PinePhonePro. I'm really looking forward to seeing how things perform with a little bit more under the hood.

@mike Absolutely. And these IoT projects like mycroft are certainly going to make things like the pinephone more useful. Perhaps it's the years of closed phones that made me lose touch of what phones can do for us, but actually there is so much!

@ivanrancic Shouldn't be, and if you're running the GUI on the same box as the core, you don't even need to do that.

@mike is it enough to simply open that app and ask/write questions? Because I tried writing and nothing happens.

@ivanrancic Depending on where you installed #Mycroft to, it looks something like the attached. I put mine in ~/Apps/mycroft-core. Once you start it, you're going to have to pair the device to their portal (unless you're locally hosting Selene). It'll give you a code to put in and the directions are pretty straight forward.

@mike it took Android phones a few generations to be: "i dont care about specs" to have a fast and pleasent experience... i wonder where the pinephone is currently...

@da_habakuk That's a good question. I think with the current PinePhone, it's not quite there. The #PinePhonePro is rumored to run about the speeds of midrange Android devices. This isn't SUPER speedy, but it could be enough to push it into usability range for an average user. If it gets enough support, a PinePhone2 could very well already be reaching the "i don't care about specs" range.

@ivanrancic It might be easier to do the installation from GitHub. That's where I've always done mine from.git clone https://github.com/MycroftAI/mycroft-core.gitcd mycroft-corebash ./dev_setup.shThis will ask some really straight forward questions (I pretty much just answer Y to all of them). It'll do a bunch of stuff. When it's done:./start-mycroft.sh all./bin/mycroft-cli-clientYou can watch the logs and stuff from the cli client, and you should be in business at this point.

@arlequin Well, I'd say give it a shot and see how you feel about it when it's in your hand. Personally, I've liked Plasma's UI compared to Phosh. It feels more refined? I like it well enough that I'm going to spring for the #PinePhonePro when it's available. I think with a little bit more horsepower, it could really be viable.
