I really wanna daily-drive #FreeBSD in this #RaspberryPi (like I'm doing right now), but two issues sort of break the deal: - No WiFi drivers available and - No sound (!!!)Judging by the tone of the posts at the FreeBSD forum discussing these, looks like these two ain't going away anytime soon either, so oh well.Perhaps it's time to look into Arch Linux ARM or something.

@kzimmermann Daily drive, use like your main Computer? Does ist (apart from the problems you mentioned) work that well?

@anonimno yes, like a desktop pc. It works as well as a normal desktop installation besides these issues, but the lack of sound cards detected means you can't even listen to music while working, which is annoying

@kzimmermann @anonimno #RaspberryPi is a really tough board to support for an open-source OS because it turns out that there is no documentation how to write drivers for it. #ReverseEngineering and guessing is the only way. That's why it is so hard to find kernel developers to do the super needed work to support Raspberry Pi boards in #FreeBSD: it's just extremely tedious work. 1/2

@kzimmermann a lot of Linux distros other than Raspbian or whatever its called now run on the Pis, and quite well. That being said, if you're looking for a more FOSS-friendly SBC I'd go for the Pine64 RockPro. Same general price point and performance, but without (most of) the limitations.

@kzimmermann @anonimno Of course, considering that RPi is THE board people have and use, there is no excuse for FreeBSD not to support it well. Just because of that #RPi should be the primary platform FreeBSD supports flawlessly. It becomes more understandable once you learn that #RaspberryPi as a hardware platform is #openSource unfriendly.See this email from a former #FreeBSD RPi maintainer for more detailed support status: https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-arm/2021-March/023214.html 2/2

@mpts @kzimmermann #raspberrypi #hardware is #opensource unfriendly? Can you expand a little bit on this?

@anonimnoLet's just say that the Raspberry Pi foundation decided to "cut some corners" on the hardware to reach the attractive target price. This included as far as I can see having some of the parts only work with proprietary hardware, most notably the broadcom wifi. But oh well, it's cheap and that's what most care about right? /s@mpts

@bob yes, that's also a pretty big gotcha that passes too often unnoticed by those aspiring to get an SBC.Also, the stuff the raspberrypi foundation did with raspbian (MS repos, etc) is pretty questionable too.

@kzimmermann - Spend 20-30 $ for an Atheros USB Wifi stick, a cheap USB Audio stick, and maybe a hub.- Does Bluetooth work? Use that for Audio.- Buy small Wifi repeater with Ethernet that has a client mode. About 10$.***** OR *****- Install Tails. Much privacy, no Microsoft. My personal choice.

@mpts thanks, that's exactly my conclusion as well after what I read in the forums.Guess that the RPi Foundation thought it wouldn't be too bad of a compromise if they used hardware with proprietary drivers only so long as they worked with Linux. And I guess most Linux folks who use them are not well aware of this, but when it comes to non-Linux stuff it's much more apparent.I'm not demanding that FreeBSD support them, though. It works pretty nicely as it is - but yes, could be better.

@fedops yeah, I thought about getting another kind of board, but got a little lost in the midst of the sea of models. But I had not thought of Pine64's stuff, good suggestion.Another factor was that for the Pi, I can physically walk to a shop and buy one or two with cash in hand. The other boards are not nearly as ubiquitous for cash (even though this country's economy is pretty liberal). But yeah, I had my eye on a few other distros like #Alpine too. I just need time to try 'em!
