people really see Linux running on some device and their first reaction really do be "but can i use X feature", as if the developers got paid for any of the probably 100s of hours of work they did.we really need to teach people to stop being consumers.

@calebccff Well you don't want people to make informed decision? Also I think developers at Canonical, SUSE, and RedHat at least do get paid.

@huy_ngo in the case of e.g. a phone, where i think the majority of people wouldn't expect to actually *use* it as a phone, it just comes off as invalidating all the work that has been done by the developer, "oh you spent weeks debugging why the screen doesnt work? thats cool but what about wifi"You are making the same mistake as everyone who says stuff like this, the developer didnt do that work so they could sell you a product, so stop treating it that way

@huy_ngo if i were charging you money in some way, for support, for a device i had made, whatever, then it becomes fair to start asking for features.I know the majority of the comments asking about a particular thing (and ignoring the value of the work) aren't done out of malice, its totally reasonable to ask about what works. It just shouldn't be done in a way that treats the interaction like one between a customer and a vendor.

@calebccff Originally you didn't say anything about the dismissing tone. If they just say "but I can use X feature" I can see no harm.I view this not as "I demand you make these features" but "As long as these features not available, it is not useful to me so I wouldn't use it". I can't see dismissing such feedback does any good, if not harm—it discourages people to engage and give feedback, even to the point they don't want to use the software. If you need funding, then say so.

@calebccff Yes this! I had requested features to be added to the software i used. And faced a cold response..But after looking at the source and making the pr request and getting the feature i wanted in the software was so much better.Even pointing out the module that needs to be modified in the codebase is orders of magnitude better than vague feature requests in my opinion. Now I understand that open source development is a labour of love, not a responsibility.
